Family: 'Silent victim' of Clackamas mall shooting has died
SELLWOOD, Ore. - A woman who was not injured during the mass shooting at the Clackamas Town Center last December but who became mysteriously ill afterwards has died, according to posts on a Facebook page dedicated to her recovery.
KATU News reached out to Vanessa Ogden's family through Facebook early Friday. A representative for the family said Vanessa was in a Beaverton hospital, "has no brain activity" and would be taken off life support on Friday while surrounded by her family and friends.
Just after 3 p.m. Friday, an update was posted on Ogden's page that she had died at 2:26 p.m. She was surrounded by family and friends. The family's pastors led the group in prayer, the post said.
"The love that was in the room was so strong you could reach out and grab it," the update said. "It is exactly what Vanessa would have wanted."
"This story is not over as this family needs every bit of prayer and support you can offer," the post said.
Ogden was the manager of a popular kids clothing store at the Clackamas Town Center when a gunman opened fire in the mall on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
She was seven months pregnant at the time. When the shooting started she herded her employees and customers at Justice for Girls into a backroom and kept them safe.
But in the weeks following the shooting, the normally bubbly Vanessa started to withdraw and became tired and quiet. Eventually, she stopped speaking.
Initially, she and her husband Doug thought it was a combination of the pregnancy and maybe the trauma from the shooting. She became known as the "silent victim" of the shooting incident that left three people dead, including the gunman.
But her condition deteriorated and she wound up in the hospital before Christmas. An MRI revealed she had suffered 60 to 70 mini-strokes. She hasn't spoken since Christmas.
Despite her condition, Vanessa gave birth to a daughter, Georgia, on Dec. 27. The couple also have another daughter who is 16 months old.
On Thursday, Valentine's Day, Facebook posts said Vanessa had gone into respiratory arrest and doctors could no longer detect brain activity.
She was breathing only with the help of a respirator. "Our darkest hour is near," the post read. "If ever we needed a miracle, it is now. This will be my last personal communication to you."
It appears the post was authored by her husband Doug but it was not signed.
Just after 1:30 p.m. Thursday, a post by "Geoff" appeared on the page reading:
Dearest Followers,
We had a conference with the doctors and family/close friends. The decision to take Vanessa Off the ventilator is the last decision that needs to be made. We are waiting for more family to get here to say goodbyes. We have consistently had 15 people in the room with V. Lots of tears and lots of hilarious stories being passed around in these final days. Pray for the wisdom to make the hardest decision Doug and his family will ever make. Thank you.
During the shooting at the mall, Doug said Vanessa, who stands just 5 foot 2 inches tall, clung to her usual feistiness.
"Even when SWAT came, she told them that she wouldn't open the door unless they showed identification," Doug previously told KATU. "And the SWAT guy said, 'Well, I can't slide my badge under the door.' So she said, 'OK, I'm going to be the only one coming out but you can't come in.'"
But as time went on, Doug said her feistiness faded.
"Her speech was definitely hindered – considerably, although she was able to say one-word answers: 'Hello,' tell people 'Merry Christmas,' 'Thank you.' That kind of thing," Doug said.
Doug said doctors were not certain if the shooting caused the mini-strokes, but they also haven't ruled it out.
Test were conducted but KATU News has not heard of any results of the tests.
My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Vanessa Ogden. This tragedy should open the eyes of those that doubt to the reality of PTSD. Imagine what our Soldiers are going through....

@Kraut Yeah, Evil Obama has the biggest military machine in human history, and you're gonna stop him with a few AR-15s. You guys watch too much TV.
Is this a case of mind guilt? Does she think it should have been her? I pray if it is that she gets help before its too late! So many people love her and are grateful that it wasen't her too!
@Paulette Haas what the.... Did you even read the article?
Such a sad sad day with loss of this brave lady. Rest in Peace Vanessa. Thank you for your bravery. God Bless your family.
<3 thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family...so sorry for your tragic loss
She died a Hero, to her family, friends and people who never had the chance to know her. And for this she will live forever in the memories of so many. Rest in peace angel of God. You will never be forgotten.
Doug every time you look into the eyes of your daughter's that love will be reflected, and your beloved will be present in heart...always, blessings
Heart breaking news. God bless this family. God bless you, Vanessa Ogden. Such sorrowful news contained in this update.Â
so tragically sad. what caused this to happen? i hope they try to find out. someone very close to me died 12 yrs ago, we never knew exactly what happened. my family still wonders, and that can eat you up, especially the first couple years.
I certainly hope that Vanessa's family or friends do not come upon these ridiculous posts that some of you are placing.. What disrespect to a young woman who regardless of reason, has lost her life at such a young age and has left a husband and two babies behind.. (along with numerous friends and employees).. Try reading the story again, but use some sensitivity and post something supportive to the grieving and skip the political rights thing for once... You're so quick to show how smart you are, you lose the opportunity to help someone else..
Bye Vanessa.. You'll always remain in the hearts of the ones that knew you..
@Heidi Nahhhhh, I already live in an overly PC world as it is, I'm not going to play nice online so you can fell better about yourself.
Vanessa, get well soon. Think positive thoughts! Think big, you have so much to look forward and so much good to share with humanity. You have a mission of love to accomplish. Get up, dust off your shoes, and start your journey, now! Blessings for your and yours. Sending you my love and good thoughts.
@Maria L. Alago ..read the article...geez, she passed away!
What a tragedy. Godspeed Vanessa...
A high stress situation can bring those on in a person, especially if they have other medical conditions. Something similar happened to my grandmother a few years ago. She was sitting at a railroad crossing waiting for a train to pass. The next thing she knew, she came to and was surrounded by parts of the train. When the train derailed and the parts came flying at her vehicle, she had a series of mini strokes. Her doctors said that she had pre-existing conditions that made the strokes possible, but that the high stress of the situation was the trigger. For some time after the incident she'd have more of the strokes at the sound of the train coming through town or when she had to wait at the crossing.Â
Soooo sad for her entire family. What a horrific loss.
I'm an ER nurse and have treated stroke victims of all ages at work for 17 years. I agree it likely had no relation at all to the shooting. Pregnant women can enter a coagulopathic state and are at a greater risk of stroke due to pre-eclampsia (which includes high blood pressure), or can have a partial rupture of the placenta that when the body tries to repair sends the body's clotting systems terribly awry, called DIC. Many other things can cause DIC and stroke, but those are the most common given that she had so MANY strokes, not one event. Who knows what caused her many strokes. Strokes caused 5.3% of pregnancy-related deaths in 2006 according to the CDC. That's more than 1 in 20. http://www.cdc.gov/reproductivehealth/MaternalInfantHealth/Pregnancy-relatedMortality.htm
http://www.virtualmedicalcentre.com/diseases/disseminated-intravascular-coagulation/730#Risk_Factors
My heart goes out to her family, husband, and babies.Â
@Holly now the larger question, What is causing the strokes in women in child bearing years?
All you people on here that think your all doctors, should go back to school if they think you have all the answers..
It does not really matter.. What matters is that a husband lose the love of his life and two small girls will never really be part of there mothers life.. I will be praying the God lifts you up everyday and makes you stronger in your darkest times.. I pray that when the sun shines that you will think of the beautiful times you had together.
RIP Vanessa.  and my prayers go out to her family.  As to those who got into that little spat just below.  Sham on you, show some respect.
I am sorry but she is not a victim, I think it was a serious medical condition brought on by her medical condition .
While I do fee for the families lost, I do not think this had anything to do with the shooting.
I think a full Autopsy would reveal the real cause.Â
Again I am sory for the families loss, but I have to call and ace an ace and a spade a spade.Â
She died to complications due to her pregnancy.
Doug-- Sorry the love of your life has left for HEAVEN. Thank goodness God is ultimately in control and day by day you will move on.Â
how sad. its very possible the stress of the shooting WHILE pregnant caused this. We will never know though. my thoughts are with her family
I hope she gets well , But I want to know whats under the food court floor ? the ice scating ring is gone. You use to be able to walk around the food court flicking pennies at ice scaters now its a wood floor with no stores where it was just a wall with an escalader in the middle :/ has she tried medical pot ...lol
@Nickolus Stanger ..wow...can you even read? she passed away already!
Seriously?? Â Are you kidding me? Â A victim of the CTC Mall Shooting?
You liberal scumbags.  Did it ever occur to ANYONE it might have been a complication of her pregnancy or any number of real medical conditions?
@Constitution Warrior I'm sure that the Colonists were called "liberal scumbags" by the British during the founding of this nation. At least those you label "liberals" are capable of being flexible, whereas people like you who are incapable of bending more often break when pressured. I'm sure we all feel safe with your kind.
BTW...I like guns and agree with the Second Amendment, but I don't turn every discussion or disagreement about them into some kind of massive conspiracy to deprive everyone of their arms. It is what it is, just politics, rhetoric and a way to work fools into a froth to vote more fools into office who are so easily swayed by perceived threats. It's been happening since our government was founded.
@Constitution Warrior Troll. You conservative scumbag heartless wretch. Only someone as horrible as you would tie politics to this. Did it occur to YOU that a very real deteriorating medical condition could have been caused by the stress of not knowing if any of them would survive the massacre? Ever hear of someone having a heart attack or stroke from fright? Ever hear of premature labor due to stress?
@57Â Did she have a heart attack during the shooting ? Â NO. Â Did she have premature labor due to stress? Â NO
@Constitution Warrior I'm curious what your credentials are as a expert in the medical field? I can assume that you are a obgyn doctor? How many years have you been practicing medicine?
@noneofyourbizzness The same as her husband, KATU and the rest of you. Â
@noneofyourbizzness @Constitution Warrior I was thinking the same thing, none. How do we know PTSD combined with a pregnancy cannot cause this? How do we know if it can? This is a very unique situation and nothing should be ruled out including mental trauma from her experience. After all, strokes are caused via the brain. Combine extreme mental stress and possibly hormones from pregnancy or pregnancy complications and you may be in an uncharted medical area. Not all diseases or disorders have yet been found. I applaud the doctors for trying to determine what had occurred with open minds and doing the best they could with so little to go on. I wish her family all the love and healing that they may need.
@Constitution Warrior The liberal scumbags will use this story to push their anti gun agenda.
@Jim330rifle @Constitution Warrior Nope, reactionaries like you are giving us all the reason we need.
@Jim330rifle @Constitution Warrior And we'll be proud of it since you're handing it to us on a silver platter!
@Jim330rifle @CTWU @Constitution Warrior Yep.
@CTWU @Jim330rifle @Constitution Warrior That is why this country is going to hell it is because of liberal scumbags.
@Constitution WarriorYou know, it's possible to be pro-guns AND still be sympathetic to other humans. Just FYI. You're making my side look bad, since I support guns. You're no medical doctor and there's no way to rule out whether it was a coincidence OR if there was some relationship.
@Morticae Causation or correlation, we will likely never know.
@Morticae LMAO.  That's funny/  But her husband is?  Let's all jump to a false conclusion without any evidence.
@Reinholt Messner @Constitution Warrior @Morticae wow...Im thinking you have that backwards... Conservatives are the open minded ones... Libs are the idiots with one thing on their mind... whos gonna take care of me!?
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae thats called being open minded and thorough, something conservatives aren't very good at I know. It isn't your fault that your brain is damaged by years of jesus and gun worship.
@Constitution Warrior
Very scary legislation indeed CW, I never thought I would live to see something so alarming in these United States.
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae Only in your paranoid world do you think people are saying this is 100% related to the shooting. I can't argue with someone who lacks reading comprehension, so I will give up. I just hope you don't do any public pro-gun arguments, because you're making that side look crazy.
@Morticae
According to the bill, anyone who, on February 1, 2013, legally owns or is in possession of an assault weapon has until September 1, 2013, to do any of the following without being subject to prosecution under Minnesota Statutes, section 624.7133:
The rule would also apply to anyone who receives the weapon as an inheritance.
H.F. No. 241, Â as introduced - 88th Legislative Session (2013-2014)Posted on Jan 31, 2013
https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bin/bldbill.php?bill=H0241.0.html&session=ls88
@Morticae LOL  Yeah  it would be the obvious coclusion in a 7 month pregnant woman that her medical condition would be caused from hiding in a closet because no one ever has had complications from a pregnancy
Paranoid?  That's funny.  Yep  New York didn't pass any legislation.  No other states have had bills introduced like MO and MN banning firearms, made it a felony to possess them if not turned in within 90 days
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae No. Because I'm a rational sentient being, I'm stating we can't be certain if the shooting had a role or not in her medical situation. Whereas you, with a swagger of arrogance and a twinge of deep paranoia about anti-gun legislation, are claiming omniscience.Â
@Morticae Are you seriously trying to say PTSD is the cause of her medical situation?
@Constitution Warrior So let me guess, when someone comes back from war and they start having problems, you don't think there's any connection?
What was the title of the story again?
Family: 'Silent victim' of Clackamas mall shooting has died
No I know nothing about trauma after combat tours in Iraq.
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae Yeah, that proves what I'm talking about. Thanks. So, you should back off and relax.
@Morticae LOL  And this comment doesn't mean anything
"Doug said doctors were not certain if the shooting caused the mini-strokes, but they also haven't ruled it out."
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae And how does that translate into blaming the shooting to be the sole cause of the problem? If you read what I just quoted above, you'd find they think it was a combination. Do you know anything about trauma?
@Morticae LOL.  That's funny.  I read their FB page.  As per their FB page  "Vanessa is a silent victim of the December 11th Clackamas Town Center shooting."
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae Obviously you didn't read the article. You're blaming her and her husband for this article written by someone else! They never said "THIS IS ALL BECAUSE THE SHOOTING!!"
@Morticae LOL.  Obviously didn't read what I wrote.  But of course not.  The obvious conclusion in a 7 month Pregnant woman is that it would be caused by her being in the mall during the shooting.
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae ... "Initially, she and her husband Doug ***thought*** it was a ***combination*** of the pregnancy and ***maybe*** the trauma from the shooting"
@Constitution Warrior @Morticae That's exactly what you did. Jump to false conclusions. Everyone else commented RIP, etc. Congrats on being a jerk.Â
@Constitution Warrior Ever heard of the term "scared to death" or of people having heart attacks during or very shortly after a stressful event?  I'd be 99% confident that her cause of death was, in some way, a result of the actions at CTC.  She didn't need to be shot or to even see a gun to mentally and physically know and respond to the fact that her life and the life of her unborn child were in  mortal danger.  She disregarded the natural warning signs and put her life (and, again, the life of her unborn child) on the line to save the lives of her customers and employees!
If that isn't stressful and causing a whole host of internal biological warfare, I don't know what is or what would qualify!
Having followed the story, I've read of the various tests and studies the doctors have done trying to heal Vanessa or at least understand what she was experiencing. Â They ruled out pre-eclampsia, TIAs, and Long QT Syndrome (three of the most likely and immediately looked at situations). Â If for no other reason than because some of these also include genetic predispositions for her children.
Fine. Â Call me a liberal scumbag. Â I've said before and I'll say it again, it's only a silly label with no real purpose or consequence. Â You don't have to dodge a bullet, skillfully slide past a sword, or any of those other things to be a survivor and to face the stresses of coming to terms with the possible immediate (and painful) ending of your life.
Having been in a very stressful situation, I know what it's like to have all of these thoughts run through your head when the most basic, primal thought is to run like he!!.Â
Ultimately the legal determination of her cause of death will have to be determined by the medical examiner(s). Â I hope, for Vanessa's family's sake, they do find a cause just to put their minds at ease. Â If it wasn't a result at all of the shooting, so be it. Â But it is equally as plausible that her condition was something completely different.
Bottom line: Â a brave young woman will now be denied the chance to mother her children and be the loving wife she had every intention of being when she walked into the mall to start her shift on the tragic day of the shooting and she never returned home to her family whole again after that.
@CTWU @Constitution Warrior If that was the case I should be dead by now. 4 car wrecks , an ex wife who sought to kill me.. and the list goes on.
@lee986321Â Some people can certainly handle it better. Â But were you actually pregnant at the same time of any of your named events? Â Different chemical hormone concoction entirely going on there as well as additional blood flow and waste by-products being generated.
Its clear that some people can either handle the stress better or be able to be trained to handle it (like soldiers, firemen, and police officers).
We also don't know what her life before all of this was like. Â Was she an abused child? Â Was she ever stalked or raped? Â Now I'm not saying that she was subject to these things AT ALL just stating that we don't know her past or what she'd previously gone through.
I think we'd all be amazed at how many times we came close to losing our lives (if I weren't already so prone to anxiety attacks, I think it would be interesting to look into this for my own life) but have conscious awareness about it is completely different.
@lee986321Â The entire population of the KATU comment boards out to get you... and on and on.
@CTWU @Constitution Warrior   Major way to go, CTWU!!!!! I'm thinking that "construction warrior" is male, as that has to be THE only reason to react the way he (??) did. So sad. What is even more sad is that her daughters won't be able to know how very great their mom was in trying to protect her employees. Their dad will tell them, though, how great their mom was. But your words are outstanding!!! Good on ya!
@Constitution Warrior "liberal scumbags"... I don't know what's worse, calling her a victim of the shooting or that inane statement.
@JTesla What's worse is the media running a story that a 7 month pregnant woman, who happened to be in a mall during a shooting and was uninjured,  had a severe medical condition and the obvious conclusion would be it was caused by her being uninjured in a mall shooting.  Yep no agenda there
@Constitution Warrior @JTesla Except thats not what the story says
@JTesla I read your comment. Â
@Constitution Warrior I guess you didn't read the comment you replied to. Odd, because it's only one sentence.
@Constitution Warrior @JTesla Your paranoia is making this into something bigger than it is.
@Constitution Warrior Easy now there Warrior....I'm a Dem and a middle of the road lib...so, don't sit there and call us all scum bags.  I agree with you on this, and how tragic and sad it is...I don't believe from what I have read that it had anything to do with the shooting.  Obviously there was some health issues here...and along with the pregnancy, maybe it triggered this onset.  It makes me sad that these little girls will grow up without knowing their mother.  Unfortunately the media has decided to take this sad story and tie it into the CTC mall shooting just because she was there during the shooting.
@PD1202Â Â Did I make a comment on someone's comment? Â NO. Â I commented on the story.
