Prosecutors: Bank robbery suspect wanted cops to kill him

VANCOUVER, Wash. – A 19-year-old man accused of robbing a Wells Fargo bank last week in Vancouver was trying to commit suicide by police, prosecutors said.

Police shot Stephen Lubeck in the hip as he tried to escape after the robbery Thursday.

Prosecutors say Lubeck walked into the Wells Fargo armed with a BB gun, demanded money and forced a teller into a vault. He filled a bag with $300,000 cash and ran away from the bank.

He was shot by police and taken into custody at a nearby strip mall. Police recovered the money.

Prosecutors said Lubeck’s statements to police indicated he wanted them to shoot him.

The officer who shot Lubeck is on leave while the case is investigated.
