Rain returns to the Northwest, expect a lot more by Monday
PORTLAND, Ore. - At long last, the rain has returned. But what a great run summer had.
After a stretch of over 100 days of blue skies, warm temperatures and summer fun, broken just once by a piddling .04 inches of rain many weeks ago, Northwest weather reality has returned along with the rain drops.
KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby says to expect rain today with steady rain Friday night, followed by showers on Saturday.
- Watch Rhonda's morning forecast
- Who's talking about the rain? Lots of people
Then, on Sunday, the real soaker moves in. "We'll get more rain in the next four days than we got in the last 100 days," Shelby said Friday morning. She said the forecast calls for a total of up to one and half inches of rain in Willamette Valley locations through Tuesday. Coastal and mountain regions can expect even more.
After that, things begin to dry out a bit, but for how long?
Drivers are reminded that when the rain starts falling, it's time to remember your wet weather driving safety tips: increase following distances, decrease speeds, and maybe get some new wiper blades, which have been cooking in sunlight for the past three months.
Shelby also warned drivers to watch for hydroplaning when heavier rains move in Sunday into Monday.
And maybe now is a good time to dust off the skiing and snowboarding gear as well. While no new snow is expected at ski-level elevations with this storm, the unofficial start of ski season - Thanksgiving weekend - is just six weeks away.
- Weather advisory from the National Weather Service
- Rain? Big deal. Remember the Columbus Day Storm 50 years ago?
- Some musical rain from the 1980s
- Got photos of fun despite the rain? Send them in!
Rhonda says rain Friday night could be heavier than earlier predictions. Here's an update:
Good grief! I know it's yucky, rainy, outside, but having just ventured forth to check on Herman's progress in digging up my yard, I discovered that one of my neighbbors actually has their fireplace going. Maybe it was Herman trying to stay warm in his catacomb-like tunnels.
Thank you National Weather Service and NOAA for providing such accurate timing on the arrival of the rains a week in advance. I was able to squeeze in a few more sun bathing sessions. Alas, my neighbors can finally get a reprieve.
Rain will not affect Herman, the attack gopher ruining my front lawn. Spotted him today wearing SCUBA gear and holding an umbrella!
@jpk gotta love those killer gophers from hell, maybe he will get territorial and protect your lawn from the occutards!
Herman ain't gonna make it that long. I'm going through my use of force options as he doesn't take to my verbal persuasion and physical presence. I also hope he's not on a social network trying to find a mate!
@jpk ......good one !
 @jpk You, too. Sheesh.
is the time fame :2;00 is that time where we have that weather alert that is kicking in?

I'm glad to see the rain again... just had my landscaper over last weekend; he cleaned up, pruned, etc., so this rain will really be able to soak into the ground... my trees & plant's are already looking soooo happy ~ Â and I don't have to pay the City of Salem for the water..! Â :-)
Hahaha, now you've alerted the City of Salem so they will be trying to figure out how to charge you for the rainwater you receive. After all, the water will end up in the sewer system.  Â
@jpk ~  chuckle, chuckle...  Have no fear, jpk; the COS is very good at finding more things to charge us for... they don't need any "helpful alerts" from me..!   :-)
Ah, the annual "Flush the Californians" event I've come to love so much. Â Clears out all of the undesirables in a few short weeks.
@Festivus has not worked on me since I came up in 1972. In fact, it is one of the reasons I stayed. The rain makes the air so clean!
The comment "Northwest weather reality has returned" just shows that KATU and a lot of other people don't have enough intelligence to realize that the best part of the Northwest is east of the mountains where they don't have depressing rain for nine or ten months of the year. Â But this is what you expect from the entitlement crowd on the west side. Â No brain, no clue about what goes on in the rest of the state. Â Time for these people to get their heads out of the sand. Â But, from what I have seen, it won't happen.
@boomer A little early for Seasonal Affective Disorder, dontcha think?  You couldn't even last through one day of rain.
@Festivus @boomer Get him! A little moisture and people start bitching already!
AAAaahhhhhh....rain!! I can feel my skin plump up already...and looky!!! My hands really aren't made of paper :)
Â
oregon sunshine here we come!!!!
Back to Hawaii, just in time....
Really? Everytime I've been to Maui, I got rained on in the afternoon.Â
I wish it only rained at night and then was sunny again the next morning. Then I wouldn't mind the rain so much.
What if you worked the night shift?
@jpk But I don't that's why it would work for me.
Ugh.. it's going to be a nasty commute tonight.
Â
@negativerep You are right on. It took me 3 hours to get home.
@negativerep  The Banfield hydroplane races begin at 4:30 p.m.
@Playanekes  @negativerep Pshha.  You should have tried it in the early 80's before the repaving/widening when the ruts were six inches deep in each lane.  First freeway trip I ever took as a driver, in the rain.  First loss of bowel control behind the wheel.
It is about time!!!!
All I gotta say is that I am happy it is raining. Look at how low all of the rivers are in the area...its the lowest I have seen them in years!
@portlandborn83 I don't like the rain, but I am happy it is raining. I hope it helps with all the forest fires.
