Chilling Report: 10,000+ could die in major Northwest quake

SALEM, Ore. (AP) - More than 10,000 people could die when — not if — a monster earthquake and tsunami occur just off the Pacific Northwest coast, researchers told Oregon legislators Thursday.
Coastal towns would be inundated. Schools, buildings and bridges would collapse, and economic damage could hit $32 billion.
These findings were published in a chilling new report by the Oregon Seismic Safety Policy Advisory Commission, a group of more than 150 volunteer experts.
In 2011, the Legislature authorized the study of what would happen if a quake and tsunami such as the one that devastated Japan hit the Pacific Northwest.
The Cascadia Subduction Zone, just off the regional coastline, produced a mega-quake in the year 1700. Seismic experts say another monster quake and tsunami are overdue.
"This earthquake will hit us again," Kent Yu, an engineer and chairman of the commission, told lawmakers. "It's just a matter of how soon."
When it hits, the report says, there will be devastation and death from Northern California to British Columbia.
Many Oregon communities will be left without water, power, heat and telephone service. Gasoline supplies will be disrupted.
The 2011 Japan quake and tsunami were a wakeup call for the Pacific Northwest. Governments have been taking a closer look at whether the region is prepared for something similar and discovering it is not.
Oregon legislators requested the study so they could better inform themselves about what needs to be done to prepare and recover from such a giant natural disaster.
The report says that geologically, Oregon and Japan are mirror images. Despite the devastation in Japan, that country was more prepared than Oregon because it had spent billions on technology to reduce the damage, the report says.
Jay Wilson, the commission's vice chairman, visited Japan and said he was profoundly affected as he walked through villages ravaged by the tsunami.
"It was just as if these communities were ghost towns, and for the most part there was nothing left," said Wilson, who works for the Clackamas County emergency management department.
Wilson told legislators that there was a similar event 313 years ago in the Pacific Northwest, and "we're well within the window for it to happen again."
Experts representing a variety of state agencies, industries and organizations expanded on the report's findings and shared with lawmakers how they have begun planning.
Sue Graves, a safety coordinator for the Lincoln County School District, told lawmakers that high school students in her district take semester-long classes that teach CPR and other survival techniques in the wake of a giant earthquake. The class teaches students to "duck, cover and hold" when the ground starts shaking.
Maree Wacker, chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Oregon, said it is important for residents to have their own contingency plans for natural disasters.
"Oregonians as individuals are underprepared," she said.

â@AngelofYHVH: Chilling Report: 10,000+ could die in major Northwest quake katu.com\/news\/local\/Repâ¦kqfâ WTF????
Most, if not all, bridges will come down in Portland, Vancouver, Seattle. Food will be gone in a few days and trucks will have a hard time delivering. Stock up now, get a water filter, and guns to protect yourself against traumatized, starving people. Don't forget, no showers, maybe no running water, no toilets, no electricity for weeks.
I witnessed the total devastation caused by unexpected magnitude of Tsunami in East Japan 2 years as a part of Tokyo Institute of Technology team. We have learned a lot of lessons from the tragedy. We really need to use the knowledge to mitigate the risk in North West coast line in US. Then 20,000 lost lives and countless lost cities in Tohoku will not be in vain.

@Kit Miyamoto Well said Dr. Do you know of any published papers or websites that outline those lessons learned? Something people can refer to?
a prudent person would have everything he or she needed for at a minimum of 30 days in light of this most certain event. yet DHS and napolitano will deem you a hoarder and domestic terrorist if you do. hope and change baby!!!
As part of the ring of fire, it's no secret that the west coast and the northwest in particular are at risk. People need to stay informed and be ready. Every single person should have a plan on what to do if a major earthquake strikes. Have a place to go if needed. Store water, food, first aid gear, batteries and flashlights, N95 face masks, extra fuel to keep warm or bug out, radios to communicate with if the grid is down.Â
Don't trust the government to help you. Remember hurricanes Sandy and Katrina. Prepare to save yourself, your family and your neighbors. You may be on your own for a month or more so build your stores accordingly.  Plan for the worst and hope for the best. Disaster may not strike in your lifetime but what if it does? It's better to be prepared and safe than sorry.
400,000 people have tobacco-related deaths yearly. just putting it into perspective.
@gntl, yes but those people choose to die! we are talking about an act of god here!
@KATUNews And a lot of our Equipment Is under the bridge. Work used to be prepared. not any more.only CPR . Sad really .
@KATUNews
I will rent a bedroom in my  home  to anyone wanting to escape the wrath of the earthquake.  It's east of the mountains where the danger is next to zero.  Only $1000.00 per night.  Ten day minimum.  Bring your own sleeping bag and your own food.
Given how many guns are out there, I wonder if they included expected deaths from gun totting paranoid idiots after a quake?
@deejm2112 - leave them alone and they won't shoot anybody. come and try take what they have and they will. why is such a simple concept so hard for you entitlement maggots to understand?
I think there might be a lot of needless deaths among those that didn't prepare in advance, and then switch to "gimme, I'm entitled" mode after the event.
somehow im thinking 10,000 might be on the low side if we have both a quake and tsunami...
Old news.
@abhunter, old news? those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it!
If the Oregon lawmakers would outlaw earthquakes, we'd all be safe!
Perhaps the biggest contributor to initial deaths will be the fact that building earthquake codes in the Northwest were not properly updated until the 1990s (source: Scott Burns, professor of geology, Portland State University). Anything built before then is fair game, which happens to be most of the buildings and bridges we live, work and drive on. I think 10,000 dead may be a sorely conservative estimate, but I could be wrong.
Time to buy property in Banks, it sounds like future beachfront property.
Its funny that this story comes out days after Kitshaber signs on a bridge because the old one isn't rated for earthquakes.
@PeterAWolf I had no idea we were in an earthquake zone.  This is the first time I've heard of it.  I think the timing is suspicious too.
@Festivus @PeterAWolf So your ignorance is proof of a conspiracy?Â
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_Fire
@Festivus @PeterAWolf There are faults all up and down the west coast. A major quake could take out most if not all of those old bridges in pdx. Should they go down even if you live through it, it's going to make getting in or out of pdx a challenge. And there's a large segment of the population that doesn't have more than a day or two of non perishable food on hand. It could get interesting real fast.
Look it's Scare 2 News again. You pop a balloon in a grocery store, someone might die...
@Michael La Right you are! Earthquakes are a myth! All those volcanoes around Portland appeared by magic!
The Cascadia Subduction Zone, just off the regional coastline the northerly part just this morning had .
1. @ 12:05 am 4.5 quake
2. @Â 12:46 am 4.6 quake
3. @ 12:55 am 4.4 quake
4. @  2:28 am 4.5 quakeÂ
May be sooner then we All think...
Go to USGS and look what is happening just south of Clearlake CA near Chico CA.
Over 300 quakes in just the last week alone from 1.0 to 4.3...
@uknow2  if you understood what these mean you might not say that, the fact that these smaller quakes are happening and the fact that they are frequent and spread all over is a good thing! beware when most of these quakes suddenly stop one day! and pressue builds up, thats when the big ones will hit! yes i said big ones, there will be more than one!
@uknow2Â Isn't the rule of thumb that with each small quake some of the pressure is lifted? That would take care of the possibility of any major quake
@myopinion240
Yes, until it completely releases on March 17th. ....gonna happen.Â
This looks like another case of "scaring money out of people." How much do they want this time?
@PeterAWolf Similar to predatory sales tactics, If it didn't work it would not be used.Â
Yes, let's all move to the big city and maybe it will be 20,000+
yup, I live smart but not in fear of when it will occur. we may not know the day nor timenbut it is wise to prepare for such events. it is not foolishness to prepare for things of this nature. it is more foolish not to prepare after all we live on this planet we have to understand its rules and it has one golden rule. .It is in control we're not it choses what it wants to do. And there's no stopping her.. just remember if NY got creamed by a hurricane and Japan got creamed by a quake it can and will happen to us here as well. Hell it could even trigger Yellowstone to erupt when that quake occurs. aI just hope I we visiting my parents when it hits. There at 450 and on solid rock. sure we might lose a few buildings. but we can rebuild.
Neighborhood Associations HOAs should be the leaders in something like this they are all about preserving their areas livability..
If we had (like back in the day) a local civil defense.
We should all be organized by now if not collectively then individually..
Does anyone have a GO bag set up??  Â
@uknow2 Yes, it includes my assault rifle.

@Dr. Rawdog Problem is, they all live under the bridges that will become their tombstones when the big one hits.
@Dr. Rawdog  There are a few of us that have camped out for extended periods June to Sept. off the beaten path, no facilities. Not easy, but doable if you have a water source.
@Dr. Rawdog They know how to use a blanket and find a soup kitchen. Both will probably be in short supply.Â
Come out and see me, I'll teach ya how to poach your neighbors' cows and not get caught :-)
@Dr. RawdogI'm sure you already know how to urinate on the sides of buildings so you're 50% there
Water, non perishable food and lots of ammo, Government has spent alot of money doing nothing but worthless studies by so called experts, your on your own.
@Great now what! What would you have done differently??
@Great now what! Ah, yes, guns make everything better.
@Harvey 1701 @Great now what! If food supplies are disrupted for months, how would you feed your family? I live in a rural area so I would hunt-therefore yes, guns are imperative and would make things much better.
Do you think that with massive destruction there would be mo looting? What do you think the gangbangers in greater Portland are going to do if something like that happens? Do you think THEY have guns?
@WhenCowsAttack Harvey is convinced guns are the root of all evil.
If you live on the coast, or are visiting the coast when a 9.5+ earthquake off the coast generates a tidal wave, there is no way you will be able to escape. Even if there was time, all the roads leading away from the coast would be jammed, with no traffic going anywhere. The wave would scour the coastline clean, destroying homes, roads, just about everything. It would be impossible for emergency crews to get in unless they were flown in. So, basically, if you were lucky enough to survive, you would have to fend for yourself.
I remember reading that one town on the coast stopped using the tsunami sirens and instead went to a reverse 911 type system because they did not want the sirens scaring people. Go figure.
Well! When my time comes, where can I hide? Let it be, let it be, I love Beatles :) See, I am prepared.
I haven't prepared for an apocalypse. Humever, I bought a sturdy single level home strategically placed on good soil. My trailer is well stocked with fuel and stuff. Hopefully, I will get lucky and be home at the time. There's a 33% chance I will be. Excluding major vacations to equally dangerous locations. I'm ready, bring it on.
@Lips Don't worry afterward you will get to pay for the other 95% of the population that did nothing to prepare for the next big quake or asteroid...

@klouvinclutter Yeah, it's true. Just had an emergency alert in your area. Emergency broadcast system is urging you to seek shelter in your crawl space. Did you miss it? Were you playing video games?
@Lips I thought crawl spaces were only for tornadoes:)
@FreedomRocks I think we went through this the other day, Mr. Freedom -- crawl spaces are for spiders and snakes.  Period, the end.
