Residents in Clatsop Co. aim to restrain drone flying

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — Clatsop County residents are asking county leaders to ensure potential drone training at Camp Rilea would be kept within the base's airspace and not public skies.
The Daily Astorian reports that the Oregon Army National Guard presented their intent to use Camp Rilea for drone training exercises at a county board meeting in June. They say that it would be used inside the base and in designated training areas.
But that didn't stop local residents, including Astoria City Councilor Drew Herzig, from presenting a letter during Wednesday's meeting.
The group submitted a draft resolution that outlined use of the drones, asking that they be prohibited from public airspace in Clatsop County.
Herzig said the group wanted to make sure it didn't become used outside of the base's airspace sometime in the future.
The draft also indicated that the drones should not be armed or used for civilian surveillance.
stopping drones will only hurt the private citizens. if you want to take a picture from your remote control flying device you will become a lawbreaker. the government already has satelllites that can read a book in your window and you aren't bitching about that. google earth has a safety devise that if you get too low it doesn't let you see anything. Some of you people are NOT taking your schizophrenia medication.
The issue is Camp Rilea already tries to close the beach during July and August. On the weekend about 2 miles north of Sunset Beach access, the set up a humvee with a couple of armed troops on the beach. They will flag down your vehicle and say they are conducting fire arms training. Basically trying to insinuate the beach is closed. Each time I ask them "Is the beach closed?" and they respond "No but you would in danger!". I tell them "thank you, I will take my chances". I then watch them call with their walkie talkies to tell them to "Cease fire there is a **** vehicle coming through plate number *****" I just roll up my window and proceed to the Ft Stevens access.
@Bob Dontno Why would you do this? Why would you willfully force them to cease training just so you could have your special day all by yourself driving downrange? Â
@Playanekes @Bob Dontno OK , heres how the range saftey works at Rilea. There are two teams of beach guards on either side of the beach access in fromt of the firing ranges. They are there to call a check fire when someone refuses to stop and wait the 5 min while a firing sequence is goign on. The ranges are about 1/2 mile back from the beach . There are high berms as backstops. The state of Oregon feels that having someone be bop on the beach in front of the ranges while training is going on is not a good thing as if someone did get hit by something, That person would whine and whine about it.Â
Now it seems they are whining BECAUSE thier saftey is taken into consideration. I say  let you people drive by while firing is going on and let God decide who lives and who dies.
@Bob Dontno Thank you bob. Because of you and people like you I have to stop all firearms training on the post.
I just want to let you know that for your selfish act you have deprived some young kid the chance to learn how to defend themselves. I hope you're proud of yourself.Â
Next time you  hear of a young soldier dying in a fire fight, or shot while walking patrol I just want you to think about whether that kid was deprived his chance for defense because some dumb ass wanted to excerpt his right to drive on the beach.
Most of the people we encounter are decent about it, but then we get the drunk that can't keep his vehicle on the highway.... so they take the beach to try and avoid the DUII.Â
Thanks to you bob there is some kid in a box because you are such a big man that will take chances, and to hell with everyone else.
@Razor1Â @Bob Dontno Baloney! I spent 26 years in the Army, and if a live fire exercise was being conducted where some public access was dangerous, IT WAS CLOSED. Not optionally. Not if you feel like it. CLOSED.
And if they didn't have authority or ability to close it, the fire exercise wasn't planned in the first place.
Sounds more like a bad case of "Camp Incompetence" then anything else. Your CO and admin staff need to be brought up on reckless endangering charges.
@trololol I can imagine a situation like an amphib landing exercise (We did those in Puerto Rico in my time, but the people and government of PR has ended that.) My personal experience is public access and overlook at Ft. Lewis (now JBLM), and similar at Ft. Hood. We closed those if there was even a remote chance of error that might endanger a civilian.
@ShallowEnder Why use a public beach for a live fire drill? Â
About 2 miles short of Ft Stevens there will be another Humvee and a couple of more armed troops. Both hands on AR-15's holding it diagonally across their chest. I just wave to let them know I am through the area. This happens all summer long every weekend almost and usually both Saturday and Sunday. I drive this section of beach to get to Ft Steven most weekends. If they are doing fire arms training it is awful quiet as I have never even heard a faint pop. It is a real pain. to make me stop just to get through, and it makes this part of the beach unusable while they are there all day, most weekends. Now what will they try to keep everyone off this PUBLIC beach always? They would not want you watching them train, fly drones or worse start filming them....So? Please someone ask them about this when they say "we will stay within our base". When they say training grounds do they mean the beach too???
@Bob Dontno You are a liar. When exactly did you encounter armed troops, and if you are such an expert how can you identify an AR-15? Just to let you know our service personnel don't care AR-15s. But since your'e such an expert....
Thanks for all your help bob.
I would comment on this but I don't want to d-r-o-n-e on and be a part of the problem... **rimshot** Thank you...unfortunately I will be here all week. Don't forget to pay your art tax.
Aw gosh someone had to say it.
I can't blame anyone from not wanting drones in public air space. Be proactive on the issue. Nip it in the butt now. First they want drones for surveillance, then one day they find a way to justify being armed.
I remember when they were first used overseas to watch the bad guy. To see over the hill for recon without endangering our troops lives is a great idea. Most people cheered that development, me included. Next thing you know drones were being used to kill the bad guys. Some were American citizens, but bad guys none the less. I thought that sounded pretty good if it protected our troops.
Now the government has permission to fly drones domestically, unarmed. One day they will be armed and if you don't believe that, I have some WMDs in Iraq to sell you.
@The Resistance How long did sadam have to hide the WMD? Ask the Kurds that are left if they thought the WMDs were non-existent
@The Resistance "I have some WMDs in Iraq to sell you." You just got flagged by the feds.
@TreeWizard Rumor is the wing of the building that keeps my flagged posts, will be finished in 2014.  thoughts and prayers.     p.s. ANARCHY -WMDS - CHAOS- REVOLUSHUM -HONEY BOO BOO.Â
@TreeWizard They already got most everyone's home GPS coordinates during the last census.Â
If I have the street address, I haved the latitude and longitude withing 30 feet.
@axpman @TreeWizard Not mine.
I can see where drones would serve a good purpose. How about using them for search and rescue in the mountains? I could be wrong but I think most airspace over cities is controlled airspace. A drone would have to go by the same FAA rules. It seems to me that drones can be regulated.

@feral Your right it has nothing to do with the 4th amendment. It's not like they are coming into your home, and pulling a Tricky Dick.
@TreeWizard --- if they are being Tricky Dick you probably won't know it since Homeland Security can tap you phone, monitor your internet without a warrant.
Nice try at sounding innocent, but you included Tricky Dick and 4th Amendment in the same paragraph and I'm sure those are key words to being flagged by the FEDs, so we are both screwed.
@The Resistance @TreeWizard I should have known better.
now heres a project to get behind.  headshake.   people are psychos
Who cares? Maybe they will catch me scratching my balls or something. That is the worst they will find on me. I have nothing to hide; so they can pucker up, I havea big butt, plenty of room for all of them to kiss!
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com It's this passive acceptance that allows crap like this to continue.Â
@iamtroglodite@yahoo.com---- Wow and you really believe that. Sometime ago Homeland Security encouraged neighbor to inform on neighbor. The Patriot Act says something to the effect Homeland Security can monitor your phone calls, internet and bug your house if they suspect terrorist activity, without a warrant. Lets suppose you've said or done a seemingly innocent thing and it attracts Homeland Security attention. If you are suspected of terrorist activity you can be held indefinitely without charges.Â
Okay, with that said, it's hard to blame anyone not wanting drones, their home photographed or their location pop up on map with just a few key strokes. Much of this is too late to stop, but new infringements on your privacy must be stopped as soon as possible.
You don't loose your rights overnight, they take them a little bit at time so you don't notice.
Just say no to drones. Unarmed flights are the precursor to armed flights. It's funny how some people who are very adamant about our 2nd amendment rights on these threads don't seem to mind drones being flown in our airspace. Everybody has the right to be secure in the persons, every person has the right to privacy. Sure, helicopters and planes can spy on you, but it's resource consuming. The scope and ease of the drones ability to spy is staggering and shouldn't be taken lightly, it sets a precedent and desensitizes us to further governmental intrusion into our daily lives. People will say, "I have nothing to hide so I don't care," while we should all be asking "I have nothing to hide, so why are you trying to watch me?"
We are allowing a precedent to be set in our country. Why do we need flying robots spying on us, supposedly "preventing crime?" When will they start arming drones in the name of "ending crime?" Because when that happens it will be far too late to end our beloved drone program, that's for sure.
@McDankens No they dont, They cry about government regulations that keep their air, water, and earth clean, but dont mind big brother watching everything we do.Â
They love to talk about the war of independence but they are the same people who wouldnt mind if the red coats stayed in their home.

@feral @Trickledown @McDankens Some people prefer gray smocks.
@Trickledown @McDankens Trickledown...is that what happened to your brain?
@McDankens I am an adamant supporter of the second amendment, that said, drones scare the living hell out of me.
@McDankens "It's funny how some people who are very adamant about our 2nd amendment rights on these threads don't seem to mind drones being flown in our airspace."
No, that's not correct. If you follow the right-wing media, it's very uncomfortable with the idea of drones and drone strikes.. 2nd Amendment types aren't happy about it either. We've been telling people that but apparently you're not listening. A Marine told me that the problem with a drone is, some desk-pilot blows up an entire housing complex to get one alleged terrorist, and then the Marines have to go sift through the rubble and dead people and gore and angry survivors to find out if they even got the guy. A drone will take out an entire clan of peaceful citizens but people in boots still have to go in there and see what they hit.
The government just gave the Navy, in 2012, $750,000,000 to develop a new unmanned aerial vehicle. The right wing is astonished that they're giving Drone pilots a new medal that's above the Bronze Star for valor, which you have to get in actual combat.
@McDankens I am pro-Constitution and I am most definately against this.
@McDankens Plenty of pro 2nd amendment folks not happy.
I have to say this is just stupid.  I understand that everyone knows about armed drone flights killing terrorist.  Yet are there terrorist in Clatsop County?  No!
There are invasion of privacy issues and they need to be addressed.  But lets not over react! Â
Drones? Â Just use piloted aircraft or satellites which are already used by Google or Bing. Â I see you Mary.
There is no "Clatsop County airspace." Â Folks should read the Constitution if they're going to serve in government. Â The chain of command goes Federal, then state, then local. Â This is like Private Pyle telling Sergeant Carter how things are going to be from now on. Â What a bunch of goobers.
@Diogenes Nope.
banning drones will also ban private citizens from flying model aircraft to take pictures so be careful or you will lose more freedoms you have now.
The cat is out of the bag on drones. Won't be long before private citizens can toss one the size of a hummingbird in the air with a micro camera and controlled by a computer. Be very scared, people.
@shewiz I recall Katu did a feature on some small mini flying machines a college group programmed to fly in and around items. Now they only need to attach small cameras and there you go!! Let's see....
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQIMGV5vtd4
@shewiz ---- I haven't looked here, but I just came back from overseas and you can buy miniature RC helicopters with cameras for a little over a hundred dollars. They take high res still and movies with sound.Â
What you are talking about is already here.
@shewiz I predict lots of little holes in windows from wayward BB-gun fire.
Between Facebook and other forms of social media, there is NO privacy anymore! Stop worrying about the spy in the sky, people! Unless of course you have something to hide.
@jpk --- Really, that's your answer? You never know what Homeland Security thinks you are hiding. They will tell you if you have something to hide or not. These are perilous times and you can't risk loosing one bit of privacy voluntarily.Â
Drones, coming to a neighborhood near you.Â
@The Resistance @jpk We as the people need to unite and buy some drones and spy on the spiers.Â
@The Resistance @TreeWizard @jpk I guess the question will become. If I am watching the watchers, who is watching me watching the watchers?
@TreeWizard @The Resistance @jpk --- You first and let me know how that works out for you.
Somehow I think the residents of Clatsop County have things to hide they don't want seen! Could it be MJ farms? Drones are a lot cheaper than helicopter flights looking for the stuff! Also cheaper than patrol deputies! Whatever!Â
Go ahead and spy on me if you want you won't see me doing anything wrong and you will get bored and go away..
@old_dollor Spy on me and you are bound to see a full moon.
@TreeWizard @old_dollor Hahaha, they may see that at my house as well, but it will be harder on them than me.
