TROUTDALE, Ore. – The Reynolds School District on Friday announced plans to renovate the gymnasium complex at Reynolds High School, where a student shot and killed a classmate before killing himself in June.

Emilio Hoffman, 14, was killed in the shooting.

The district says the school's gym building will have new locker rooms, restrooms and a new lobby area when the school year begins in the fall.

Portland architecture firm Oh Planning & Design Architecture and other local firms donated funds, materials and labor to make the project happen, according to the district. Oh Planning and Design was already in the process of designing improvements to the gym complex when the shooting occurred.

"The district found Deb France, Oh's Founding Principal and lead architect, a willing partner in working to create a space that would support students when they return in the fall,” said Superintendent Linda Florence. “The gym complex serves the entire community and we wanted the gym complex to be a place that welcomes and honors the important work that takes place there. It will provide opportunities for the community to heal and recover from the events of June 10.”

The remodel will also feature new security doors, trophy cases, floors and ceilings in the entry lobby.

Donating to the project

If you would like to donate to the project, materials donations can be coordinated with Oh Planning and Design and cash funds are being accepted through the Reynolds Education Foundation to install a multimedia wall and to complete exterior improvements to the gym complex.

Checks can be sent to the Reynolds Education Foundation at 1204 NE 201st Avenue in Fairview, OR 97024 or via paypal.
