PORTLAND, Ore. - The homeless camp located at West Burnside and Fourth Avenue for the past two years may be on the move, but it will not be to a lot underneath the Broadway Bridge.
The city of Portland and the Portland Development Commission will be working on a property deal to move the Right 2 Dream Too camp. The initial plans were to move the camp to the lot underneath the bridge, but Pearl District businesses owners and developers objected, threatening legal action.
The city would sell the lot to Pearl Hotel investors for $142,000, but it will be subject to a parking lease to REACH Community Development, which develops and maintains affordable housing. Portland's city council will then consider an ordinance to buy the parking rights from REACH and agree to cancel the lease for $896,000 from Pearl Hotel investors.
$50,000 would go to REACH, but the rest would go to the city and be designated for efforts to assist Right 2 Dream Too in finding a new permanent home. The camp's board members have agreed to the concept as long as it can resolve the issues that developed between its lawyer and the city attorney.
