Robbery suspect accused of beating employee with stick
PORTLAND, Ore. – Police arrested a man who they said beat an employee with a stick during a robbery at a Portland business Saturday afternoon.
It happened at Maria Tienda Mexicana, located at 11146 Northeast Halsey Street, just before 12:30 p.m.
Toby Wylie, 19, hit an employee with a 2 x 2 stick and took money from the business, police said. Another employee then chased him out of the business, but he got away.
The victim was not hurt.
Police used a K-9 unit to find Wylie and arrest him. He was taken to the Multnomah County Jail, where he faces charges of robbery (1st and 2nd degree) and assault (2nd degree).
I hope that K-9 was given a proper reward.
Ban sticks!
Even at age 19 this guy has the dead eyes of an incorrigible turd.
Toby looks glum because he knows he'll do a minimum of 60 months and will probably have to get his knees dirty. Sounds like good work is ahead for this one.
think it should be called a Staff not a stick. if you want a quality Staff get a Maple closet rod of your choice in length.
Toby looks so very glum!
see? see? Talk about taking away guns and they go for sticks!!! Was there a permit to have one?
@fracas  Odd comment... Do you think the store employee's chance of survival would have improved if the turd used a gun instead?
This event is certainly nothing to shake a stick at, but GERN CERNTROL SAVES LERVZ
Looks like somebody already beat Toby with an ugly stick. Probably where he got the stick.
If we didn't have any stick's this wouldn't have happened. Â
@Ken Beck Sticks. Not "stick's."
@Ken Beck True, but if a gun had been involved, the store employee would probably be in far worse condition. This turd has made it perfectly clear he's willing to use weapons, and he has no concern for his victim(s).
If it's possible that a person could die from being struck with an instrument, i.e., 2 x 2 stick..he should also be charged with attempted murder.
@flyingtime Murder only if they can prove that the intent of the blow was to kill. Otherwise it is only assault, and because the employee "was not hurt," that part of the crime would be only a misdemeanor. The robbery part is what is serious.
I have a perfect idea how to use the stick on him.
@noneofyourbizzness Don't you mean were to put the stick in him?
Since when is a 2x2 a stick? One could do a lot of damage a square club like that.
@WebFootSTi Especially if it were a strong dense hardwood - ash, oak, etc. Come to think of it, the 2" diameter approaches a baseball bat (partly) and wooden bats are usually made out of green ash (if I remember correctly).
This "stick" might even have been wrongfully shortened to make it concealable!
Probably the same way a semi-automatic firearm is actually fully-automatic, per the media. This "stick" probably compelled the man to use it. After all, it's just another tool gone bad.
@jpk  Thanks for the lead-in to this public service announcement:
Â
Just a friendly warning to all of you do-it-yourselfers and weekend handymen: Do not leave 2x4 "sticks" out in the open where young, impressionable folks might get hold of them and use them in acts of violence. You, Home Depot, Weyerhaeuser, Bob Villa, and the HBA (Home Builders Association) are in our sights and we WILL confiscate your lumber.
@HenryBowman  @jpk OMG! I'll make sure I play pick up sticks then..
Good one!
@jpk Might have been round like a dowel or broom handle..
Could be, as the media usually isn't that specific. 2x2 could be 2" diameter. LOL
I guess now we have to control or ban assault sticks? LOL
@jpk all lumber shall be no longer than 3 inches to prevent them being used for assault. don't forget the glue when you get your wood.
Toby Wylie, wasn't so whiley was he. 2-3 years if he's lucky
Fortunately, no one explained to him the meaning of a 'stick up'.

@str1ngb3nd3r He will find out that meaning in the jail.
