SW Barbur closed after tree falls onto power line causing explosion

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Officials closed all lanes of Southwest Barbur Boulevard (OR 99W) Friday afternoon after a tree fell onto a power pole and burst into flames when the transformer on the power pole exploded.

The fire and the threat posed by the sparking transformer were enough for officials to warrant a closing of the highway between Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard and Southwest Capitol Highway.

North-bound traffic is being directed onto Terwilliger Boulevard and southbound traffic onto Capitol Highway.

Crews are working to bring in equipment needed to shut down the transformer and extinguish the fire in the tree, which is a few hundred yards north of Terwilliger. The road will remain closed for several more hours and officials have yet to determine when the lanes will re-open.
