KELSO, Wash. – Kelso police say the man taken into custody Thursday morning after a standoff is a convicted felon.

Twenty-six-year-old David Baker is also connected to a gun theft that happened in Cowlitz County Wednesday night.

The Thursday morning standoff happened at apartments near Teresa Way and Florence St. The first 911 call came in just after 7:40 in the morning.

Police Chief Andrew Hamilton told KATU that Baker held his girlfriend and her mother hostage. They were released safely shortly after the SWAT team arrived.

The man wanted to harm himself and officers, Hamilton said. Hamilton went on to say that Baker was texting people saying that if police showed up he would not be taken alive.

Neighbors saw police throw tear gas into the apartment where Baker barricaded himself with a handgun. After officers made their way inside, Baker was taken into custody a short time later without any further incident.
