Salvation Army finds gold among red kettle coins
HILLSBORO, Ore. - The Salvation Army in Hillsboro has received a much needed boost from an anonymous donor.
When bell ringers were done for the day on Monday, they counted the coins they collected, but it wasn't long before they found something out of the ordinary: three gold coins.
Someone dropped them in a kettle outside the Fred Meyer in Hillsboro. The Salvation Army thinks the coins are worth at least $250 each.
“It was a lot of fun,” Lt. Emmanuel Masango with the Salvation Army said. “We had a couple people with smart phones so they quickly went on there and said “hey, this is worth this much,” so we were really excited.”
They don't know who dropped off the coins, but the donation came at the right time.
Kettle revenue is down 25 percent in the Portland metro area, bad news at a time when donations are really needed.
“We even had somebody do a little happy dance,“ Masango said.
The Salvation Army (a Church) is a Tax-Free Real Estate Empire....
@August100 I made a statement that they use the money to lobby against gays/gay marriage, which is the truth! And my comment was removed from this forum. I suppose this one will be too. Yes, I do consider the Salvation Army to be an Financial Empire in sheep's (church's) clothing. I would not give them a penny.
American always see negative things in positive things. Why ? I don't care what you guy talking about is right or wrong. but does it happen every where ? all Salvation Army's Employees are bad ? all of them good ? all of them discriminate ? the way we think just too complicated. maybe we think we are so smart. smarter than other people. plz talk about good thing. yes there is bad thing but there is also other place to talk about bad thing too. not here.
We give DIRECTLY to needy people; no ridiculous & demeaning "QUALIFYING" required.
@August100 In MY experience when I was in my teens and twenties, the only "QUALIFYING" I needed was to be hungry or cold. They never told me I did not "QUALIFY". They never forced religion on me; of course they had a sign with times for services if you wanted to go. I traveled a large part of the country in the 60's and 70's; stayed at a few Sally's AND Missions. I can tell you, I saw a lot of corruption at some of the Gospel Missions but not the Sally's Of course; you have to realize that as long as you have the human element involved, there will be the potential for some wrong doing.

You,"August100", are obviously someone who has had little contact with that side of life, but would like people to believe you know all about everything. I have met many people like you in my life; you read a little something about a subject you know nothing about and suddenly you are a self-proclaimed expert.
Sure glad the counters were honest and didn't remove and keep them for themselves. And they are worth way more than $250 each! Thanks go to the person who donated them!
I'm going to invest in gold soon because its value is rising about 15% each year. Why keep all that money in the bank if you get no interest?
Like any other collectible, buying at a premium is different than getting them sold later for a profit will be. Be careful with buying gold as you may not get out of it what you paid for it.
Nitpickers!!! Prove it.
Over 100 years in business and BILLION$ & BILLION$ in 100% TAX-FREE money laundered through the Salvation Army (a church) and they still have the homeless sleeping on the FILTHY FLOOR in Jammed-Packed human warehouse shelters...
@August100 says the person who has never given a dime to the homeless in their life!
@acepixure You are correct; I have never given a homeless person "A Dime"....
 @August100Â
Sounds like you have issues with churches, and therefore are against Salvation Army (a church) also...
Â
They do a lot of good for a lot of people. Feeding and sheltering homeless is a big issue.. Feel free to step up and try to do even a fraction of what Salvation Army does!!
They will even help people with rent or housepayments if in need!!! You're right, what a bad organization!
It's a nice story, I just wish it could have happened to a better organization that doesn't openly discriminate against people.
You mean openly discrimnate against criminals that have a history of theft...yeah that is awful what are they thinking
@JimmyWally no openly discriminate against openly gay individuals. By either refusing to hire, or firing once they find out, or flat out refusing to assist if they find out you happen to be gay.
@musiclover And you know for a fact that being gay is choice? What is your proof? There was an in depth scientific study into the DNA of people who are gay done by some of the best minds of Europe and they could not prove or disprove that it is a part of DNA. Therefore, it could be genetic or a choice. You, musiclover, are the type of person which made me lose faith in Catholicism and all organized religion. God doesn't ruin religion..it's man who has ruined it with their hate. It's not God who hates people. It's people who hate people. While I have no beef with the Salvation Army (I haven't heard of discrimination), you bringing your views into the conversation is sickening. I am thankful that I have a wonderful relationship with God WITHOUT having to being around people with your point of view. Tonight, I will pray to God to show you that your hatred is not very Christian like and certainly not God like.
If that is true, I will support them!! Homosexuals have to understand that if they CHOOSE that lifestyle (yes, it is a choice - no one is born that way!!!) they will have to do so without help of the righteous in our society! God says it's SIN, and it is obvious that it is a deviant lifestyle, so why should they expect anything but fire and brimstone?
@Ramsesthegreat  @JimmyWally Can you prove this? Can you provide a link or something that proves it?
I love this and even more so I love the fact that there are happy stories in our world. Â
