Deadly stabbing: 'There is still a murderer at large'
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- One man died after a stabbing at his home near Lake Oswego Monday morning. Clackamas County Sheriff's deputies are still searching for the suspect.
Deputies identified the victim as 57-year-old Fredrick "Fritz" Wheeler Hayes, Jr.
Witnesses said Hayes was walking his dog with his wife when the suspect stabbed Hayes outside their home.
The suspect ran away after the attack and Hayes' wife called 9-1-1.
Deputies said there is no indication that the suspect and Hayes knew each other before the attack.
"We want to remind people to exercise good safety precautions this evening," said Sgt. Adam Phillips with the Clackamas County Sheriffs Office. "Lock your doors, be aware of your surroundings, report anything suspicious. There is still a murderer at large."
Deputies and police dogs searched the area with the help of deputies in an airplane, although they didn't have any luck spotting the suspect. Police made reverse-9-1-1 calls to about 4,000 homes with a description and warning about the suspect.
"We're thinking he may have been in this area in the time leading up to this morning's attack," said Phillips.
Neighbors said Hayes was a hardworking man, a loving father and an excellent neighbor.
"He was more than an employee and coworker. He was a brilliant engineer and caring mentor, and most of all a good friend," said Hayes' former employer Robert McMillen in a statement.
"Fritz retired only a few months ago and was as happy as we had ever seen him as he was planning his well-deserved time off," McMillen said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and he will be sorely missed."
Deputies did not say what the motive for the attack might have been or if anything was taken from the home.
"The person is armed with knives, more than one," Phillips said. "This is a stranger-on-stranger attack," he added.
The suspect is described as a 6-foot tall white male with a brown beard, slender build, wearing a "headwrap" and light clothing. They said the suspect had several "edge weapons."
Three schools were put into lockdown mode near the home on Atwater Road, which is just outside the Lake Oswego city limits. The home is near Lake Oswego Country Club.
The stabbing took place at about 6:30 a.m., deputies said.
Lake Oswego High School, Lake Oswego Junior High, and Forest Hills school were all placed in lockdown as a precaution during the search. The lockdown was lifted just after 10 a.m.
Danny Ruben said he went to get his son, Andrew, from school after hearing about the stabbing. He said school staffers "were extremely calm, really professional."
"It was working," Ruben said of the lockdown. "All the teachers locked the doors, there were adults in the halls and you wouldn’t know anything is going on by going in there."
Ruben said they students were not allowed to go to their lockers but added he felt "pretty good about the way they handled it."
Local residents are asked to call 9-1-1 immediately if they see the suspect. Carl Grossman, who lives near the scene, said he received one of the reverse 9-1-1 calls but said there are about 10 acres of undeveloped property nearby.
"A lot of places to hide," he said.
This is a terribly sad and tragic event. Out of respect for the family, please refrain from speculation and random comments.Â
Does anyone else think that the sketch of the suspect looks like a younger version of Hayes? Just odd or coincidence?
gang related initiation?
My prayers and condolences go out to his dear wife, I cant imagine how horrific that was for her. The people who say she had anything to do with this, and also the people who assume he was arab, because his head was covered, Â make me ill,, for judging. God bless you Mrs. Hayes, and God be with you! Lets hope they find this killer soon. Â
My prayers and condolences to the Hayes family, especially Mrs. Hayes. My heart goes out to you.Â
Â
Sounds like it's related to the murder that happened in Ashland last year, they think the weapon was a machete. There were no witnesses, the victim was just a guy walking home from his job at the grocery.
@greendog It reminded me of that too.  Pretty freaky!
It sure sounds like he was targeted. After doing some easy research, I posted a comment earlier and they took it down. I will say it again, he also worked with a workman's comp investigation co. nuff said. Maybe this will get taken down also. Â And I posted websites and his email address. alas..a very sad story.Â
@Penny @Bobbi Thompson Check the links, he was clearly connected to Atwater Assoc. His email address takes you there. fhayes@spiritone.com The email he used as treasurer for Lacross.Â
Maybe you didn't know everything about him.Â
He had the conversation in the first link, and signed off as Fritz Hayes- Atwater Associates
People should guard their privacy a little better. It was easy for me to find.Â
@Penny Uh, Fritz worked at All Tech 1 in Tigard for the last 10 years or so. I'm not sure of the exact amount of time, but I worked with him there in 2009 so I highly doubt someone with a "Workman's comp" grudge sat around this long stewing about it.
Fritz was an incredible man. My most sincere sympathy to his family and friends.
RIP Hayes
Â
Our world is becoming scarier by the minute. :(
Â
Its sad when people believe that the police can protect them all the time. This is just more evidence that people need to rely on themselves for protection.
The best safety precaution is to be aware of your surroundings, especially if you have no CHL and firearm handy! It doesn't matter where you live, you are always on someone's target list! Ounce of prevention, etc.
Fritz was an amazing ambassador for boys lacrosse. He will be truly missed.
How sad. My heart goes out to his family and friends.Â
Just an observation from the various media sources.......The unidentified male had been in the area for some time before the stabbing, the attacked a guy and his wife walking the dog.......what I see is this was a targeted hit, the guy was waiting for him, knew the approximate time or routine......I would first start looking at the wife, she was not attacked, then I would look at his neighbours and coworkers. This was not a stranger to stranger hit there is more to this than meets the eye.
 @FreerideNOT Ignorance to make such a statement.Â

Please people, this was the murder of Mr Hayes. I feel for his family, I hope they are able to find some kind of peace.
We lost another good one. I'm sorry Mr. Hayes for the last few moments of your life. My heart goes out to your wife and that she had to witness the attack. And my heart breaks for the hole your passing has created. May the perpetrator be caught quickly before he can harm anyone else and face the justice he deserves.
How HORRIBLE!! Crazy person on the loose with a handful of knives. Psychotic? Makes me think of the Batman movie shooting guy...random lethal violence.
They have got to get this HOMICIDAL MANIAC; this is absolutely horrifying for this family & community.
"Hunt continues for suspect after deadly stabbing near Lake Oswego"
Â
This adrress  138000 SW Atwater is NOT "near" Lake Oswego - It IS part of Lake Oswego - not downtown but in the city limits - A few blocks from LO High, LOJ and Forest Hills -- and MY house. I hope they catch this guy FAST!
I hate to say it, but I would look at the wife.  Stranger on stranger are rare, especially at 630am on a random street in LO that is nowhere near the freeway etc.  Classic wife did it, then blame a stranger and describe him so he looks like an Arab so you get sympathy.  The dogs did not pick up ANY scent, and I live 4  blocks away and there where LO Police, Sheriffs, State Troops and a plane, and no one saw anything???  Plus, don't women tend to use knives when they kill spouses?  I hope I am wrong.Â
@Dookie503 you shouldn't talk about things you are not familiar with. we knew them and know the full happenings. don't try to blame an innocent person.
@Dookie503 Do you watch a lot of the TV Show......SNAPPED?
@Dookie503 The story says that there were witnesses - I assume that means that somebody other than the wife saw that attack.
@UtterReality @Dookie503 It still could have been set up by the wife.
Though, Dookie, I don't think women tend to use knives - it's too up-close-&-personal, not to mention messy. I think they use poison or something more along those lines, or sometimes a gun so they can stay back a distance from the actual "murder".
@Dookie503 I hope you are wrong about that, on the other hand you NEVER know! - The police will find out within 24 hours...
We belong to the country club and see a lot of folks wearing those head wraps out on the golf course lately. Pretty sure this is some kind of new cult of Mitt Romney supporters. I guess the head wrap kind of symbolizes strict adherence to the value of greed and God of Money.
@MrTibbulate Your're NOT funny....nothing to do with our next President!

@Solipsist01 We are off subject of this blog..BUT you know what, the election has turned into MUD slinging...who can find the most dirt on the other guy WINS..Hate politics!
@Solipsist01 Ha ha  I'll give you that one - you got me there!
Â
At about 8:30 this morning a reporter stated on an on-line video (I believe Fox 12 News) that the attacker used a machete. Â During the 9:00 news conference, the sherif said "knife." Â Afterwards, during that same conference, a reporter specifically asked about the weapon used and the sherif said "edged weapon." Â That's where/when/how the term "edged weapon" first appeared in this news story.
@Read I think most of us are put off at the weapon description as Edged Weapon.
For Christ sake just say it: Sword, Machette, butcher knife, lawn mower blade, David Bowie knife.
Those little PR people down in Oregon city receiving big salaries like to think they are so cleaver.
@MrTibbulate  @Read I'm not typically a fan of lighthearted posts when something so tragic has occurred, but gotta give you hugs props here....

Excuse me; Thats @ Reed Mr. hair
He looks like a member of 3HO. Healthy Happy Holy Organization. http://www.3ho.org/
@KKStJohn You do have a point there. but he also looks to be an Islamist.
I find it odd that I read this article a few days ago, "From Oregon to Israel: 'I feel less safe when I go back to Lake Oswego. Libby Weiss, born and raised in Lake Oswego, Ore., to Israel-born parents who have spent the last 25 years living in the U.S., could have visited Israel as many times as she wanted without ever having to become part of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). ", and then to hear about what happened today. My heart goes out to this poor woman who lost her husband, and I hope the authorities find this evil individual (who looks as though he is playing a Muslim), and prosecute him to the full extent of the law!
I also immediately thought about the irony from that earlier piece by Miss Weiss!

@Solipsist01 I must admit that the same thought has crossed my mind. I feel confident there will be a lot more to come of this story when we learn more about who the victim was. For the time being, it's probably best to keep our thoughts to ourselves and offer condolences to the grieving widow.
@MrTibbulate  @Solipsist01 I knew Fritz and agree with the accounts of him as a kind, decent man.  It is very sad and I feel for his wife and children.  Everyone please be respectful of him and his family, they did not deserve something this horrible and don't need to see terrible things written out of conjecture.
@MrTibbulate  @Solipsist01 We blog because we can. If we were to keep our thoughts to ourselves we wouldn't be blogging. The story sounds fish. The mysterious intruder sounds fishy.  Last week a woman made up a big story about being carjacked at knife point....all a like to keep her husband from getting mad at her because she was out gambling. That was in Beaverton.Â
@KKStJohn @MrTibbulate @Solipsist01 Keyboard + Narcissistic Personality Disorder = Blog
@Solipsist01 well OK, as long as it's not Krispy Kreme
@KKStJohn  @Solipsist01 I'll concede. You are absolutely right.
This why we do blog. I'm so often accused of being irreverent that I sometimes make an attempt at being respectful and polite.
By the way; What's the KK stand for?
@Solipsist01 Honestly, Solipsist, I'm agreeing with you. It sounds too weird for words.Â
 @KKStJohn  @Solipsist01Â
And I am agreeing. Just not real sure yet what any of this has to do with Joey Buttafuoko or Tanya Harding.

Has anyone heard what the latest is on the court case against CCSO union president SRG. Steve Hyson for beating up his stepson in Clark County? Are we still Paying him?
Please remember that CCSO has had serious problems with drug abuse, armed robbery, prescription fraud, rape,
spousal abuse, and mass murder, (see Jeffery Grahn). I am sorry for your situation and the fear your neighborhood must be under. I only hope that it is the professional deputies that are responding to your situation and not the psychos. CCSO has very poor leadership and has well earned their reputation and criticism.
This is the department whos lead weapons trainer shot and killed a deputy during training with a live round.
We just had two invasion robberies on the mountain and the response time for CCSO was close to one hour.
Our community is thinking about withdrawing all tax money from the county for law enforcement and having the boy scouts start responding to police calls.

Well said.
@Caspertoo You are very misinformed on many levels. It most certainly was the lead weapons trainer who killed deputy Bowman the day following a late night of drinking and partying at the coast. Would you call it callous if I was to also report on Deputy Grahn shooting three unarmed women to death at the M&M lounge, or mentioned that management knew he was a serious problem long before he committed this horrific attack but chose to cover it up.
Please don't give me or the rest of the readers here your false information or sappy apologies for one of the most dysfunctional departments west of the Mississippi.
