Scientists: boat on Oregon beach likely tsunami debris

GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore. (AP) - Scientists say a 30-foot boat that washed ashore on Gleneden Beach on the central Oregon coast appears to be debris from the March 2011 Japan tsunami.
Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department spokesman Rick Boatner says it is believed to have been a support vessel for a commercial fishing boat.
The boat was found Tuesday - hull up - embedded in the sand with most of the hull exposed.
The Fish and Wildlife department says two of its biologists who looked at the boat feel it poses very little risk in terms of possible invasive species.
Boatner told The Oregonian that 99 percent of the vessel is covered in gooseneck barnacles, which climb aboard in the open ocean. Several other marine organisms are also present.
Boatner says Oregon Parks and Recreation will deal with removing the boat.

How much money are we wasting to send scientists out to look at this debris?
if they stop an invasive speicies they could be saving us money in the long run
 @PhuzzÂ
Ships and other debris come across the ocean all the time and there is no way to stop the flow of invasive species just like there is no way to stop the wind from bringing in seeds.
@RalphCramden I don't understand what the big deal is. You won't notice any extra cash coming out of your check for a scientist to come and look at it...are we supposed to just leave it there and let our beaches go to crap?
 @RalphCramden Yep and we only have 20,000,000 more news articles titled "Scientists think it likely is tsunami debris"...
THAT IS NO 30' BOAT! Maybe 18'.

@Dr. Rawdog What can I say, I do have a 30 Footer. I live on my Pilot House Cutter and have been around boats my entire life. I did restrain myself from making the joke about why Women make lousey Carpenters though.
"Rick Boatner"Â in a story about a boat.
I still laugh at the thought of being scared of "invasive" species. Every boat that enter the Columbia has the same crap that any of this debris does. Ohwell here's my tax money.......
 @Jeepers Exactly like we don't have crap floating up on the beaches daily and have had for say a few billion years...
It's too logical
"Scientists say a 30-foot boat that washed ashore on Gleneden Beach"

And I see they had thier 15 foot tall inspector out there. It may be one heck of a deceptive angle with a LOT buried, but even then I can not imagine that is 30 foot long.
@Peregrine Japanese feet !
they need to get the boats ID and contact Japan. see if there is next of kin...or .. if it is entirely enact, start creating a museum On that honers All..
Since the barnacles and debris are not a threat, I just wish these stories of tsunami debris washing up were held in a higher regard for the human life that was lost. Some fisherman may have owned one of these boats that come ashore and did not survive. Sensitivity comes to mind..
