Seaside teacher, coach arrested on sex abuse charges
UPDATE: Jonathan Broderick has been cleared of all criminal charges. Latest story
SEASIDE, Ore. – Police arrested a Seaside High School teacher and soccer coach on child sex abuse charges.
Jonathan Broderick, 58, was arrested on Jan. 19, according to a Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson. Broderick faces three counts of sex abuse in the third degree and two counts of official misconduct.
On Monday, Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis said his office is reviewing the case, although Broderick has not yet formally be charged with a crime.
The victim has been identified as a 17-year-old female, according to the sheriff’s office. The investigation began on Jan. 17 after the victim told her mother about the situation.
Broderick was taken to the Clatsop Coutny Jail and posted bail a day later, Marquis said.
Oregon law says a person commits the crime of "sex abuse in the third degree" if they "subject another person to sexual contact" and "the victim is incapable of consent by reason of being under 18 years of age." It is a misdemeanor.
Broderick is expected to be back in court on February 7. Marquis said his office should have a decision on charges by then.
