Sheriff: Drunk driver tries to hide in river after crashing car
The suspect surrendered after an hour in the water

SILVERTON, Ore. -- A suspected drunk driver ran from the wreckage of his car and tried to hide from police in a river about a mile away Tuesday afternoon.

Luis Daniel Hernandez, 22, of Salem faces charges of Failing to Perform the Duties of a Driver, Interfering with a Police Officer, Attempting to Elude the Police and DUII.

Hernandez crashed his Chevrolet Impala on Mt. Angel Highway NE. The car overturned at least twice, hit a tree, mailbox and shrubbery, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

Hernandez ran from the scene. Deputies caught up to him about a mile later on Nusom Road NE near the Pudding River.

That's when Hernandez fell head-first into the river, the sheriff's office said.

For the next hour, Hernandez refused to get out of the river. He eventually got cold and surrendered, the sheriff's office said.

Hernandez was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment for injuries from the car crash.
