SHERWOOD, Ore. – Police arrested the mother of two children after they were found wandering around Sherwood with no parental supervision.

Bystanders called police for a welfare check after they saw two young children walking around the area of Southwest 1st and Oak on Monday afternoon. The 3-year-old boy and the 2-year-old girl were partially dressed and unkempt when police arrived.

Police found the children’s mother, Mary Katherine Hilliker, 34, of Sherwood, inside her nearby home, but she was unresponsive. Officers said the home was unsuitable for children and took them into protective custody. They are now in custody of the Department of Human Services – Child Welfare.

Police arrested Hilliker. She faces charges of criminal mistreatment and child neglect.

The Sherwood police would like to share their gratitude and appreciation for the bystanders that came to the aid of the children, by keeping them safe, cleaning them up and providing them a clean change of diapers and clothes and giving them food and water.
