Gunman dies after shootout with police in RV park
SILVERTON, Ore. – The gunman who was shot by law enforcement during a shootout in a Silverton RV park Monday afternoon has died of his wounds, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said Monday night.
Police say the gunman, who has not yet been identified pending family notifications, wounded one person after he opened fire at the Silver Spur RV Park, located at 12622 Silverton Rd NE, just before 2 p.m.
Marion County Sheriff Jason Myers said the man was armed with a rifle and a handgun. Callers to 911 said the man entered the RV park and began randomly shooting at people and RVs.
Suspect former resident
Terry Glenn, the owner of the RV park, said the suspect was a former resident of the park who had described having delusions that people were trying to harm him.
Tenants began feeling uncomfortable with the man in the park and sought help from the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Glenn said.
On Feb. 19, the park learned that the man possessed a firearm and a concealed weapons permit, and then the next day, Glenn said the man threatened to kill people. The man was asked to leave, which he did voluntarily.
The RV park let the sheriff's office know about the weapon, the permit and the threats and asked that the man be evaluated and that his weapons be removed.
Glenn said the man who was wounded by the suspect is a manager at the park.
Authorities describe the exchange of gunfire with the suspect
In a Monday night press release, the sheriff's office described a tense scene when responding deputies arrived and spotted the suspect behind a picnic table on a small hill southwest of the park.
They said the shooter opened fire with his rifle when he saw the deputies. One deputy returned fire.
A few minutes later, troopers from the Oregon State Police arrived and were fired at by the shooter as well, the sheriff's office said. Those troopers also returned fire.
At some point during the exchange of gunfire, the suspect was hit by at least one round fired from police, the sheriff's office said.
The suspect was taken by helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland where he later died, according to the sheriff's office.
Medics took the wounded manager to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition. He is expected to recover, Glenn said.
His name has not been released.
'He was on a mission'
For Rick Norwood, who lives at the RV park, the sound of gunfire, was the first signal that it was time for he and his wife to run. The second signal was seeing the gunman up close.
"He was on a mission. I think he was here to do as much damage as he could," Norwood said. "He came out of another place, I heard him shoot a few more rounds – he came out of there, jumped in his car, went around the corner and pulled up on the bank by the pond and took out his rifle and his pistol and started reloading them again. (Then he) flipped over the picnic table and barricaded himself behind the picnic table."
Norwood said the manager, who works in the office, was hit in the arm.
Originally, it was reported a woman was also injured during the shooting but police later said after interviewing her they found she was not injured but did see what happened.
No deputies or officers were hurt in the shooting, Myers said. The names of the law enforcement personnel involved in the shooting have not yet been released. They were put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
Authorities closed Silverton Road NE during their investigation.
Police have not yet released what type of firearms the suspect used.
Great. Just like that guy who shot up the Seattle coffee shop last year, here's a crazy guy with a CHL. Clearly, there are no improvements to be made to the process of obtaining and keeping a CHL.
We tell kids no to run with knives and scissors yet nobody told this dullard that guns are just as dangerous when not used safely or properly. I even wonder how a creeper like that got a gun let alone a permit to have it in the first place.
Glad to see the Salem and County PD is catching on to Portlands style of saving on Court costs and saving tax payers money.
"...The suspect was a former resident of the park who had described having delusions that people were trying to harm him. ... The man possessed a firearm and a concealed weapons permit...."
Uh oh.. I wonder how long he's had that permit, and if he was crazy when it was issued? John Bunnell was Sheriff when I first got my CHL, and since then, to my knowledge, no one has checked to see if I've had any psychotic breaks or engaged in erratic/menacing behavior. Just wondering.Your criminal history is checked every four years when you renew your CHL. Also, any law enforcement agency arresting you is required to notify the Sheriff's Office that issued you the CHL that you were arrested. They are also to confiscate the CHL and return it to the issuing office. The issuing office is also then required to either suspend it, or revoke it, depending on the outcome of the case. Also, you are not allowed to have a CHL if you are on any form of pre-trial release. Â
@StealthActivist A pretty handy reference link; http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/oregon.pdf
In most cases, unless a physician/mental health professional reports to law enforcement that you are mentally unstable and liable to harm others, you cannot lose your CHL in OR because you are 'crazy'.Â
Insofar as legal cause, there are quite a few charges/convictions than will cause revocation of your CHL. Most common are violent crimes against persons, drug convictions, or repeat felony convictions (DUII).Â
Enjoy the irony of the story. It's the sheriff of Marion county, the same that was not going to enforce any of the Federal gun laws he didn't like, to come and take away the gun of a legal concealed weapon permit holder. Nice! Hmmmm, does the RV park owner have the right to ban weapons on his property? What I truly don't understand is why there was no good guys in the RV park to take this guy out first?
@dynamited77Â The real irony of the story is how many mental midgets have jumped on board in persuit of ideological positions without regard for facts or truth.Â
First, the letter to which you are referring (not going to enforce federal gun laws) was written by Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller.Â
Secondly, Marion Co Sheriff Meyers comments on the issue can be found here;Â http://www.co.marion.or.us/NR/rdonlyres/B5A870E9-6D6E-4AA5-A991-E8CB870C3A57/46285/Ltr2ndAmendSheriffMyers.pdf
To quote Mark Twain; Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
Note to self " don't get in a shoot-out w/ police ", the outcome is predictable...........
What a very smart manager - who alerted the sheriff's office with the info about this guy. At least the office had a head's up as to this man, so they can use the force needed to stop him. He was bent on becoming a stat.Â
Good job, officers!
Picnic tables are not what they used to be
"Police have not yet released what type of firearms the suspect used."
But have the police released what type of firearms THEY used?
Cops are lucky he didn't have any hammers
@trololol shouldn't you be out picketing in front of a Walmart or something?
My thanks to Sheriff Myers, and his staff of deputies who walked into a shootout doing their sworn duty to protect the public. I sincerely hope that the deputies who fired the fatal shots can come to solace knowing that the life they took undoubtedly saved countless others. Every account that I've read demonstrates the professionalism that Sheriff Myers expects of his deputies demonstrated by them in the situation.Â
My thoughts and prayers are with the innocent victims.Â
And good riddance to yet another career felon. Good job officers.
@Jeremy and where exactly does it state he even had a criminal record?
@Ramsesthegreat @Jeremy he shot at police, that's all I need to hear. I forgot though your way to far liberal. You want to blame the firearm, not the moron criminal behind it.
@Jeepers @Jeremy None of what you said answered my question, did it? I asked where in the article did it state that he was a career felon, and your post went off on a completely different direction, probably due to your lack of reading comprehension. I don't understand how you could have came to the conclusion that I somehow didn't believe he committed a crime; however, when someone states, quite idiotically and with zero evidence, that someone is a career felon, I ask how they came to that conclusion. But then again, facts have never stopped conservatives from believing whatever asinine things they believe, even if they're proven false.
The shooter gets a helicopter ride? Â Shoot 'em and then give them the best treatment..
I think a drive by, in a quad at a rv park would be a better story
Names nowadays are everything! Guess what? Until names are released, who cares?
Did they ask him if he was mentally disburbed or impaired before they shot him? Perhaps he could have been captured peacefully if they had brought in a psychologist to evalute his mental condition and offer him grief or other counselling. It's so sad how our police just go in and slaughter people without first ascertaining their state of mind and their mental predispositions. And it is a gross violation of the carefully worked out agreement between Sam Adams, our former mayor, and Eric Holder, our current Attorney General, to bring modern methods to our outdated police department. Oh, the humanity!!
If he's shooting, you go ask if he has a " mental disposition "........... I support the police in this case ...
@hankhandsome Â
I guess few others recognized your sarcasm.. * sigh *
@hankhandsome OMG Give me a break... Are the police just supposed to be shot at and risk getting killed because some guys blender just does not make it to frappe? No, they have to defend themselves. They have a community to protect and a family to go home to. You can't reason with people that are shooting at you. If this guy came in your house and was coming down your hallway towards you and your kids room with a gun would you try to stop him to have a conversation about his mental health and tell him to wait while you call in a psychologist? No you wouldn't, you would take action. Now stop trying to insult everyones intelligence on here. Stop blaming the police for everything. If you think the job is so back and white why don't you go on a ride along and get an education so we don't all have to read your nonsense.Â
@MeatSnak I know this is a serious story but "blender just does not make it to frappe"?  Ha!  Thanks for the laugh.
@Beti @MeatSnak :) You are more than welcome LOL
@hankhandsome What does Sam Adams have to do with this? He was the Portland mayor and Silverton is 50 or so miles south of Portland. Clueless much?
@hankhandsome Â
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and am hoping you're being sarcastic.
This has nothing to do with Portland at all. Silverton is in Marion County!!!!!
Give me a break! Police don't slaughter anyone that doesn't need it! Go back and eat your meds. You obviously need them. And stay inside your dwelling!
@jpk Just like all those homes where the police get the wrong address from their informant and they go in and shoot everyone.. even when the residents are senior citizens.
@jpk Oh  yeah, a homeless woman shot in doorway over twenty times, she was unarmed entirely.Then there is always don't chokem smokem.
@FreerideNot Please don't feed trolls and/or ... (you fill it).
US Bank Building. I know the details and all involved do you? Do you know why this happened? Different times.
This story says a whole lot about nothing at all and it says nothing at all about a whole lot.
Perhaps they should wait until they have some,, ya know,, actual facts,, before they publish a story.Â

@Tom dogboy Collins @cwpholderÂ
Figures. It's not about the truth, it's about the ratings..Â
@cwpholder That would not satisfy the sheeple thought.. LOLÂ
@cwpholder Police, guns, shooting, police shooting....Â
The only way it would have rated higher on the 'breaking news' scale is if it had involved a child (minor) or sex.
The old adage; If it bleeds, it leads is alive and well.Â
Be afraid... Of everybody, especially the police! They carry guns, ya know? Them guns kill innocent people who were on their way to volunteer at the puppy and rainbow center.Â
@MarkKpic @cwpholder Puppy and rainbow center!  Classic!  That's one for the books!
I hope the wounded people recover okay. I would be interested in knowing why the man felt he needed to settle things with a gun? Come on KATU give a report of substance.
Another network is reporting that the shooter was an 80 year old.Â
Probably thought there was a problem, so he picked up his old double-bar'l--"Uncle Joe"--and went outside and let off a couple o' blasts.
If that turns out to be the case, I'm going outside and lighting off a bunch of illegal fireworks to celebrate.
@Playanekes Now that would be no surprise, as you have been swashbuckling for a reason to use your guns, why not return to your swamp?
@PlayanekesÂ
From this day forward February 20th shall be known as "Joe Biden Day." All law abiding shotgun owners are invited to step outside and fire off two rounds in an attempt to scare off imaginary intruders without penalty of law.
@JohnQ.Public .......wrong name. It needs to be "CRAZY Joe Biden day".
Just collateral damage.
Sure love how KATU gives such complete stories, not even an update. Other's have the story...not KATU! And "the shooter is no longer a threat"...so did he die...shot...faint...run away..."just give us the facts" as Joe Friday used to say!
@flyingtime ........"facts". And news ??? Not anymore. It's the great sellout of journalism. It has to be entertaining, factual or not. Truthful or not !
@Rob C 503Â @flyingtime FERFKSAKE YOU GUYS.
Give them time to interview witnesses, talk to police, write the story, and then let the editors groom it to fit their agendas... Do you want fast, hard facts or do you want a detailed feature story with all of the calibers and pictures of the guns and mugshots and comments from Ginny Burdick...
@Playanekes @Rob C 503 @flyingtime Your speech regarding elected officials might get you the attention you crave, see what happened in Colorado?..., but then your mostly swamp gas...
@Playanekes As much as I detest poor journalism, I'll take a half-assed story from KATU over a more complete one with nonsense from Ginny Burdick any day of the week.
