Small cross found burning in Downtown Portland, police say

PORTLAND, Ore. – Police are looking for a person who lit a small cross on fire in Downtown Portland early Monday morning.

Firefighters and police responded to a report of someone trying to light the 3-foot-tall cross near West Burnside Street and Broadway just before 6 a.m.

The cross was on a sidewalk surrounded by traffic cones left over from the Grand Floral Parade, police said. It was made from small tree branches strapped together with trash.

Firefighters put out and fire and called arson investigators to the scene.

No buildings or trees were threatened by the fire. Sgt. Pete Simpson said police do not have a motive at this time.

Police described a possible suspect as a white man who is six feet tall and 30-50 years old. He had a medium build, brown hair and possibly a beard.
