Snow showers coat region, more on tap for Wednesday?
»Play Video
PORTLAND, Ore. - Snow showers moved through the Northwest Tuesday morning, giving the area a taste of winter just days before Christmas and the official start of winter on Dec. 21.
Very little of the snow was sticking at lower elevations and temperatures are expected to rise soon, but more snow showers could hit the region overnight into Wednesday.
Locations above 500 feet in elevation did see some wet snow stick to grass, bushes and some pavement Tuesday, but KATU Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby said that on Wednesday, the snow level will rise to near 2,000 feet and rain will fall in most lower elevations. Watch the latest forecast
"While most of the hills will see accumulating snow this morning above 500 feet, near sea level we will only see a mix of rain and snow that doesn't stick," Shelby said.
"A mix of rain and snow will continue below 500 feet. In heavier showers, snow will hit the valley floor at times through the afternoon," she said. "It will either melt or stick around briefly but will not become a travel problem."
Temperatures in the Portland area could reach 35 degrees overnight, leading to more snow on the ground if there is enough moisture.
Around the region, some school districts delayed opening schools and some buses were on snow routes. Check closures, delays and bus info here.
Around the city of Portland, road crews were keeping an eye on conditions but most streets at low elevations remained just wet despite the snow flurries.
Slushy snow did pile up on some streets at higher elevations, including near SW Capitol Highway and Vermont Street, where slick conditions helped land a dump truck on its side and took a TriMet bus out of action. No one was hurt.
TriMet placed a "handful" of bus lines on snow routes, according to public information officer Roberta Alstadt. She said over a dozen buses got stuck Tuesday from a combination of weather conditions or other factors, such as stuck cars ahead of the buses.
Updates can be found on the TriMet website and a special service alerts updates page.
KATU reporter Melanie Wingo, stationed on the infamous Sylvan Hill location, saw snow sticking to grass and areas next to roadways. There was some slushy snow that set up on the pavement as well.
Snow was also sticking at Council Crest above downtown Portland, where the elevation is close to 1,000 feet. Sylvan Hill is at abut 700 feet in elevation. Youngsters slid down the broad hills of the park on toboggans as the morning went on and more snow showers moved through.

Shelby said snow was falling in areas across western Oregon from Portland to Medford on Tuesday.
Mountain locations reported getting deep new snow, which is good news for skiers, snowboarders and mountain ski resort operators. More mountain snow is on the way, Shelby said.
"Meadows received 18 inches of snow in 24 hours (three feet in three days) to offer up some awesome storm riding Monday," Dave Tragethon, Executive Director at Mt. Hood Meadows said Tuesday morning. "The snowpack has increased to 77 inches and a major storm is forecast for this week."

Oh Crap we have snow and this is no joke.
I went out at about 10:30 to run a couple of errands... it was raining, but mixed... raindrops and snowflakes... so the temp must've just been hovering right at 32... Â When I got home about an hour later, the sun was trying to come out... Â now it's clouded over again, still pretty cold, but above freezing... streets fine, at least on the flatlands... Â
Over by Bush Park, I saw a lady walking a little dog; the dog had the cutest little sweater and booties on... :-)

Well, I'm in Salem... haven't seen any snow yet, but you can never tell..! Â Stay safe out there, everyone... lots of idiots on the road... and treacherous road surfaces... Â :-)
@margay1 Honestly, it's that way every day, the weather just enhances the idiocy!:)

 @lee986321 ~  Yep, that's Oregon...!  :-)
In my opinion, I don't think even the weather people have a clue as to what is going on..I personally think that they make an educated best with there models.
What they need to do is tie into the weather Underground. that would give them a bigger picture . I wouldn't mind getting a small weather station. and linking it to the web.

It's highly advisable to only eat the white snow,
and avoid eating the yellow.

Nothing here in Wilsonville
It's just starting to snow at my place (extreme southeast Gresham), but it's wet. If it'd just get a bit colder. Three more days of work and six days off. Woo-Hoo, snow would be the cherry on top.
 @Lips I got about a foot at the moment! ;P  You can have it!

 @Gravity Works!  @Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu As Griz would say, ''Hey! This is the bottom of the page... nothing interesting down here. But since you bent this far over, I can see down your shirt.''
 @Lips  :) Congrats is right! Wooohoo! Well, we have a few month's, she just found out! Hoping for a girl this time ! That would be perfect for them! :)

 @Gravity Works!  @Lips Just spoke with the youngest step in Stayton, she said they have some wet around 4 inch's there..
 @LipsI've had snow since Thursday last week.. but it did rain for a couple of hours and make a mess, now its all on top of that slop! The dogs are having a blast though!  Lost power for a few hours from the winds the other night. Had the kids & grandson here all night.. they lost theirs before we did! BTW.. expecting number two! :)Â
Â
Yeah, I had about 6 inch's by the time they put up the 1000 ft level. And its a foot now - still falling!
 @Gravity Works! Don't sound so disappointed. I know you guys hate having to buy another power tool. lol.
 @Lips Only on the roofs here.  Roads are black and just wet.  Hope they stay that way-- I have to head out soon to Parkrose Hardware for some specialty supplies and maybe a power tool.
Finally snowing here in North Portland at 8:38 am. Not likely it will stick though. Too wet out. But, hey, I could be wrong and I hope that I am. Love the snow!
Oh my God.............snow showers??????
Can't finish the articl.  Gotta get to Costco and sock in 6 weeks of supplies !
We have "SNICE" about fell on my but when I went to walk My Dog, It is white like snow but only it is ice so I call it SNICE

 @Gravity Works! LOL! Come visit.. I got plenty of shoveling here! :P
Â
Â
 @Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu Thanks, but I'll just spend the time in the wood-shop!  And if I did come your way, I'd spend too much time down at the mill (my candy store!) to be able to be of much to you and yours . . . .  But thanks for remembering me, anyway . . . . .  ];-> Â
Oh, will y'all be coming up the evening of the 25th? or waiting until Wednesday morning? Â We could easily accommodate both of you the night of the 25th, no problem.
 @Gravity Works!   :) I probably won't leave the hospital until he's settled in a room.. don't wanna loose him..lol!
 @Khre'Riov Ael i-Mhiessan t'Rllaillieu Okay, keeping fingers crossed for you.  We'll keep the light on! (grin)
 @Gravity Works!  We are planning for Thursday morning..  I plan on leaving early need to stop in Stayton and then Salem to pick up a few things etc.   He also needs to check in well before the appointment. Hoping the snow also stops before then,lol!Â
 @Gravity Works! ~ ...chuckle...  Good point..!  Â
 @margay1  @Gravity Works! Yeah he does. Of course he knows the DH and I call that white stuff the four letter dirty word here..  But then some winters we get up to 5 ft.. snow shoveling gets on your nerves after awhile!
 @margay1 Sopped up a lot with old towels, a shop vac and such, but never had to shovel a drop.
