SB lanes of I-5 through Portland will close this weekend

PORTLAND, Ore. – After canceling last week’s work, the Oregon Department of Transportation is on track to close a stretch of I-5 through Portland this weekend.
The closure, which will start at 11 p.m. Friday and last through as late as 5 a.m. on Monday, will affect the southbound lanes of I-5 between the Fremont Bridge and the Marquam Bridge.
During a similar closure two weekends ago, traffic backed up throughout the weekend on either side of the closure and on I-84.
ODOT officials say drivers should expect “significant delays” if they drive on the freeways around the closure.
People passing through Portland can use I-205 as a detour. Drivers in the immediate area will be able to use I-405 as a detour.
The Rose Quarter off-ramp from I-5 south will be open only to local traffic and cannot be used as a bypass linking back to the interstate.
This work is part of a multi-weekend project to fix pavement, repair shoulders, fix bridge joints and other work.
Other closures are planned for upcoming weekends:
- 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6: I-5 southbound will close
- 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20: I-5 northbound will close
- 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27: I-5 northbound will close

Grrr! And now parts of tripcheck are down so there are no camera views, no real time travel reflected on the transportation maps, and the stupid news is only warning of the closure, not of the current, real time, impact that they might have access to that the rest of us peons don't! I've got to get from Vancouver to McMinnville this morning, there's some type of big bike ride in Hillsboro (and the Washington County Fair), and I don't want to negatively impact traffic more than I already am by making my trip.

Would be nice to know what's going on out there until I venture out and get caught up way too deep to deal with it!
Why aren't they repairing other roads that need it more? I-84 has giant RUTS in Portland and every single bridge between Portland and the Dalles on I-84 has poor concrete. I get a giant "slam" sometimes when crossing those bridges and it scares the crap out of me.
@portlandborn83 Maybe if people stopped using studded tires from October to April, we wouldn't need to repave the roads every three years.
@Andrew Fields I agree, but sadly I'll take studded tires over road salt every day of the week. At least with studded tires your car doesn't rust away after 5 years.
Great timing for the Beer festival downtown which draws in a few thousand people. What a bunch of dolts.
@noneofyourbizzness The beer festival is a great excuse not to drive.
uck! Glad I have no plans to take me that way this weekend
