Affidavit: Son shot mom while under the influence of drugs

PORTLAND, Ore. - The 21-year-old St. Helens man, who is accused of shooting his mother and seriously injuring her, was under the influence of drugs at the time of the shooting, according to a court document released Wednesday.

The probable cause affidavit from the Columbia County district attorney's office says Robert Terry "recklessly waved" a pistol toward his mother, Dana, and then shot her in the hand and stomach while under the influence of controlled substances last Sunday afternoon.

Dana Terry was taken to the hospital where, according to the court document, she lost at least one organ. The affidavit did not specify which one.

After the shooting, police say Robert Terry barricaded himself in the family's house for about five hours before he gave himself up around 10 p.m.

At least one of Dana's co-workers, Linda Durfee, at Ace Hardware told KATU News earlier in the week that Dana was called away from work to respond to an "emergency at her house."

Several people close to the family told KATU News they believed the shooting was accidental.

Robert Terry faces charges of second-degree assault, unlawful wounding of another person, reckless endangering of another person, pointing a firearm at another person and menacing.
