Employee accused of peeping into fitting room with cell phone

GRESHAM, Ore. – Police say a 24-year-old Fred Meyer employee tried to take a picture of an 8-year-old girl in a fitting room while she tried on clothes with her mother.
Carl Rainey is now facing a charge of invasion of personal privacy, which is a misdemeanor. Police say the alleged crime happened at the Gresham Fred Meyer Monday. The girl’s mother says she saw a hand come over the top of the dressing room door with a cell phone. Police say Rainey ran off when the mother screamed.
As police were looking at surveillance video for the suspect they say Rainey confessed he did it.
According to Fred Meyer, Rainey passed its background checks before he began working in the clothing department.
"What happened was unacceptable. It was atrocious," said Fred Meyer spokeswoman Melinda Merrill. "We have terminated the employee. We are working with the family and working with the police and cooperating fully."
A background check of Rainey revealed no criminal record and Gresham police say they don’t have any reports of Rainey doing this before or anywhere else. But they have put out an alert to other police departments to find out if they have similar cases.
He was let out of jail Tuesday but has to show up in court in the near future.
Rainey couldn’t be reached for comment Wednesday.

Playing devil's advocate for a second. Do they know for sure he knew who was trying on clothes? Maybe he thought it was the mother and his intention was not to photograph the 8 year old. I don't see anything proving that he was hoping for pictures of the 8 year old. Not in this article anyway. Not saying either thing is excuseable, but it's a whole different kind of perv who wants to see an 8 year old.

"We have terminated the employee" - I'm hoping they mean what I want them to mean, that they took him out to the loading dock and 'POP!' a cap in him.
The police need to get a warrant for his home computer(s)/devices and see how many other people he has done this too. Build a stronger case against him.
Would have been great if mom had managed to grab that cell phone hanging over the dressing room door right out of his hand! He does not look too bright. I wonder if he actually thought that the mom was undressing herself in there? I would rather he be that kind of perv rather that a pedophile...though I would rather he was not psychologically twisted sex offender of any stripe at all!

The ironic part about this is that Fred Meyer says he "passed background check". In case anyone doesn't know, passing a background check to work for a business consists of not having any illicit drug or theft convictions. That's what they care about. Either of those are an automatic non hire, yet sex offenses or violent crimes are NOT automatic disqualifications. Corporate America really has their priorities and morals in line huh?
 @Annasthong Somehow, I doubt they would pick a convicted violent criminal or sex offender to hire if they had other equally qualified but non-convicted applicants. Then again, I don't know if they receive a full "background check", but that's what I'd guess.
Glad they caught this sicko before he did some real damage. If we truly had a "justice" system he would be locked away for life. Pedophiles are incurable and should be treated accordingly.
