PORTLAND, Ore. – A streetcar and a van collided Thursday evening on West Burnside and 10th Avenue.
A witness told KATU that the van went through the intersection and almost hit pedestrians in the crosswalk before it slammed into the streetcar.
According to the Portland Police Bureau, the brakes on the driver's van apparently failed. Police said the driver shouted to people in the crosswalk to get out of the way but couldn't stop his van before it collided with the streetcar.
One person on the streetcar was injured and was taken to the hospital for treatment, police said. The driver of the van was not injured.
Traffic on West Burnside at the scene is down to one lane in each direction. Police said at about 9 p.m. officers were awaiting for a crane to arrive and lift the street car back onto the tracks, and it will likely be three more hours before the train is cleared.
