Student sexually assaulted near PSU dorm; police search for suspect

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Police are looking for a man who sexually assaulted a Portland State University student in downtown Portland Monday morning.
The 27-year-old woman said she was walking to her dorm, the Stratford Residence Hall, near SW 10th and Market Street at about 3:15 a.m. and remembered a man following her.
Then she was hit on the head and woke up in an alley behind her dorm. The woman said she had been sexually assaulted and did not know her attacker. She was taken to a hospital, treated and released, police said.
Police responded and searched the area with a dog but did not locate a suspect. He is described as a white male in his mid-30s with an unshaven face, pronounced cheekbones, shaggy light brown hair and wearing a dark sweatshirt and jeans.
The woman was treated at a hospital. PSU officials said the victim will meet with counselors and the school will work to give her any other care and counseling she needs.
"I was just blown away. Completely blown away," said student Cathy Symes, who lives in the same dorm as the victim. "It isn't something that's specifically, that's ever happened here."
Symes said she and other students have talked about how students should be more aware of their surroundings because of the nature of the PSU campus.
"This is a location at the edge of an urban campus and so there's always concern," said Symes.
The Stratford Residence Hall is coed dorm for students 21 and older.
PSU is the only urban university in the country that doesn't have its own armed police force. Students who spoke with KATU News on Monday had mixed reactions to that possibility.
"I think maybe more security cameras and stuff would make me feel safe," said student Caitlin Smith. "I don't really like the idea of guys walking around looking like they're going to fight someone."
"I think it would provide some benefit, especially at night when some people have night classes, because a lot of classes at PSU are done at night, especially for females who are a little bit more exposed to dangers," said student Ian Hudson.
Oregon lawmakers gave universities the option to add their own police forces last year.
PSU Security Chief Phil Zerzan said right now, any campus investigation has to go through the Portland Police Bureau.
"We can't write search warrants, we don't have community caretaking functions," said Zerzan. "There's a lot of gaps. And I think that's something that the university is taking a critical look at."
PSU Communications Director Scott Gallagher said the school has worked to remind students to be safe around campus by walking with a friend at night.
He said students who have concerns while on campus should "reach out to Portland Police or the Campus Security Office." He also said students were sent an email about the incident.
The security office did not send out a campuswide emergency alert because the suspect was gone and there was no immediate threat, officials said.
Anyone with information about the assault is asked to contact Detective Jason Christensen at 503-823-0894.
Students who spoke with KATU News said they can only hope it was an isolated incident.
"I can't even imagine. It must be horrible," said student Gilla Brooks. "This is supposed to be a place of safety and community, so it's sad."
KATU's Melanie Wingo and Bob Heye contributed to this story.
Hah, great news, I'm starting school there in January! Hope they find this guy.
@s.c.h. It's as safe, or unsafe, as any campus is in the middle of a city at 3 a.m.
Besides carrying,I'm always über aware of my surroundings, who is beside me,behind me if I'm walking alone downtown at night. Its not that I'm paranoid but the possibility of being attacked is usually the only thing on my mind until I arrive saftey to my destination. My heartfelt sympathy goes out for this woman.I would imagine being brutally, sexually attacked was the furthest thing from her mind. This is why the awareness message needs to get out. Some gun saftey classes as well a CWP course is not a bad idea either.
I hope this person gets caught soon. I think the police should do a sting to try and nabb this scummbaggo
Can anyone show in the story where it said she was "Raped"? Â She was "Sexually Assaulted". Â No wonder things get messed up with bloggers making up their own stories.
Allow concealed carry. Its common sense self defense. Quit restricting constitutional rights PSU.
Alot of good a gun would have done for her. She was knocked from behind. The ambusher would now have a gun.
@Jacob Wessell She was ambushed. In the time a woman can recognize a threat, react, produce a phone, or a gun or some other weapon and deploy it, an attacker can close something like 60-120 feet. I know this because I dated a woman who trained escort dogs, and went to several of the lectures and demonstrations. I carry a gun because I'm allergic to dogs, but, by the time the would-be attacker perceives a potential victim, the dog already knows he's there.
@Jacob Wessell On Sammie's watch with all the city ordnance's? I will tell you that I carried a gun there for two years while picking-up another degree. Good Lord, a perverts play-ground to include those skel's that went after anyone for money and would not take 'NO' for an answer...
That's "weird" for you. I hope you all like it.
It sounds like a vagrant. Â Downtown Portland is crawling with them these days.
@UtterReality And they got no problem peeing & defecating in the stairwells of every parking garage just to show how much they love the folks that attend PSU...
even during the day downtown is swarming with some scarey, degenerate looking dudes. I once took a late greyhound bus from seattle to portland; didn't arrive until 4am. Walking through old town I was approached by two crackheads asking for a dollar. Of course I didn't give them squat but being alone out there and out numbered i'd be lying iff i said i wasn't just a little bit nervous.
@Phuzz  Portland Greyhound bus station....old town... 4 a.m.....not the best recipe for how to enjoy your evening...
Why on earth are there always comments about "why is a woman walking around at 3am by herself?" Why do we need to blame the victim??? Blame the criminal
@tablefor1 Who said anyone was blaming her? That being said if you read a story about someone getting their laptop stolen out of their unlocked car....you certainly ask the question why the left their laptop in their car and the car unlocked. Everyone takes precautions to prevent crime...this situation should have been no different. My wife won't even go to our PO Box at night because the area is secluded and there are rarely any people around.
maybe it should be rephrased. for your own safet ladies, please do not walk around alone at 3:00 in the morning.
Why on earth are there always comments about "why is a woman walking around at 3am by herself?" Why do we need to blame the victim??? Blame the criminal.
I hope they catch the coward quickly before another girl is attacked. I doubt this is this pervert's first attack, so maybe law enforcement can get details from similar attacks. I wish this young lady well and hope she can find some sort of healing and hopefully the police apprehend her attacker and provide her with justice soon.
If the perp is caught, and is convicted, I'd prefer hanging. That being said, there is almost always a suggestion by someone that the rapist be 'castrated'. Id ask those who hold that opinion, when the convicted rapist is a female, exactly which part of the female anatomy do you suggest that they 'cut off' as punishment?Â
@last boyscout I think the punishment for violent rape should be severe - to the point of death for violent pedophiles. However, I dont read a lot of stories where women commit violent sex crimes. The only one I can recall is this...
Â
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/buster/west-virginia/woman-utters-line-never-previously-recorded-police-report
I like my idea for first Offenders of Rape or any attack like this is: First Offence Punishment- Castration backed up with Frontal Lobodomy. Remove the tool and the desire. Then let the family take care of them.
Why so many 'blame the victim' comments here? Somebody was raped and the person who did it should be castrated.
"PSUÂ Communications Director Scott Gallagher said the school has worked to remind students to be safe around campus by walking with a friend at night and to be aware of their surroundings.
He said students who have concerns while on campus should "reach out to Portland Police or the Campus Security Office"
Â
I think if I were a student, I'd rather rely on the cops than a bunch of unarmed security GUARDS. But hey, in good ole PC PSU, criminals don't exist. Its hard to provide a sense of security when it so obvious that this campus lacks it. For a campus that is post 9/11, post columbine and post Virginia tech they sure haven't learned much.
With all the so called rape victims recanting lately I will wait and see if this is fro real. I have been suckered into believing the so called victim to much lately.
@RalphCramden We would expect nothing less of you, Ralph.Â
Â
And definitely nothing more.
@RalphCramden You sure have a problem about questioning sexual assault reports ALL THE TIME EVERYTIME. What are you hiding?
@RalphCramden she's already been treated. If she was hit on the head and then raped there will be evidence.
 @Playanekes Â
That is true. But count me skeptical.
 @brautigan  @PlayanekesÂ
Don't mind at all.
@RalphCramden  @Playanekes Hope you don't mind if I don't count you at all.
@RalphCramden  @Playanekes or count you stupid and in denial in a bizarre way...what are you hiding?
@RalphCramden @Playanekes  Or just count you as a woman hating jackwagon
I wouldn't assume that she isn't telling the truth...I agree it happens, but lets not throw that out there already.  Seriously did she never learn that she shouldn't be walking around downtown at 3AM by herself? Thought that would be day one stuff when going to PSU...or any large city for that matter.
 @JimmyWallyÂ
Waking around at 3AM is interesting for sure. Where was she coming from and where was she going to? There is a lot that the article doesn't cover.
@Playanekes  @RalphCramden  @JimmyWally I have worked and/or studied late at night in both Corvallis ( anchored news for KBVR! lol) and Portland over the years, and that is just the way schedules happen. I felt pretty safe getting off work in downtown Portland at 1-2 a.m. because my car was right there and people were around, than I did going across campus at PSU at 11 pm because I had to trek aways just to get to my car and there's lots of bushes and trees and empty hallways.
@RalphCramden  @JimmyWally In Corvallis I was Program Manager for KBVR-FM, and scheduling women to work the 12-2am or 2-5am shifts was always a bit troubling, but it was a well-lighted walk across the street to the library's Computer Science center, where there were always people coming and going. The overnight manager's name was Kari, I believe.
Â
My wife worked as a bartender in Texas while she was finishing her degree from UT-Dallas and usually closed the place down. It seems to happen everywhere. ...women working their way through college.
@RalphCramden  @JimmyWally I think she was coming from a bar, where she was doing a striptease in front of a pinball machine for a group of stereotypical rednecks.Â
Â
Jeez, you're a loon. Seriously man, what is your basic malfunction?
@RalphCramden  @Michael Watts  @JimmyWally how the heck do *you* know that? What are you hiding?
@JimmyWally hard with everyone's busy urban college/work/family schedules to manage a buddy system. PSU's campus is pretty dark at night and even the halls in the buildings have all kinds of corners and nooks and crannies with random people cruising through or hanging out in them.
@debmustard  @RalphCramden  @JimmyWally like any typical college student at any campus
 @Michael Watts  @JimmyWallyÂ
There is a lot more to this story than they are letting on.
In no way am I blaming the victim for the crime...but at the same time most of the population takes precautionary measures to prevent crime like locking our doors and leaving valuables out of sight in your car. Same should go for where/when and how you get home.
@RalphCramden  @JimmyWally Pretty sure bars close at 230? Or how about a late night studying session? You should be able to walk around your city and not feel like someone is going to cave man style rape you... This is why people don't talk about this... it's always the victim's fault... which is utter bs...
Â
Still...it's not a good practice...at least have a buddy system. It's sad that as a society we can't do simple things like walk home alone anymore, but everyone has to be aware of this type of crap that can happen. I hope this is a lesson to the rest of the women at PSU.
 @RalphCramden  @JimmyWallyÂ
@RalphCramden  @JimmyWally   It is finals weeks at PSU that is probably why she was out late, just finished up studying.Â
Meanwhile, OUS insists on banning weapons (i.e. concealed firearms and knives) so students have no recourse in self defense. Good going, OUS!
@Broadway97209 Thank you Broadway, that is EXACTLY what this campus needs. Students who are empowered to protect themselves and in turn deter criminals. We are a campus full of victims right now.
@Broadway97209 What your comment is nuts. She was hit over the head from behind. If she was packing heat on her I'm sure he would have taken it. Thus another gun in the hands of the bad guys. PS and if you think she could of flashed said gun she would be arrested for brandishing a weapon or Intimidation. Be cause he was just walking behind her.
@Michael La  @Broadway97209 At 3am a guy following any women would be good enough justification to pull her gun if he approached her. To pull her weapon she has to be in immediate fear for her life which I believe that would meet. Especially if she asked the guy to back off and stay away from her and he continued to come.
@FreedomRocks  @Broadway97209  @Michael La Both you and your girls ( and boys if you have any) and friends should read "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin De Becker because it is incredibly informative past all stereotypes, notions, etc. Check it out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gift_of_Fear
http://gavindebecker.com/
@whirledworld  @Broadway97209  @Michael La Thanks will look into that for both my girls...
@FreedomRocks  @Broadway97209  @Michael La The BEST defense she can have is to take a course like WOMENSTRENGTH which the PPB offers which gets consciousness, awareness, assertiveness, action and defense inside women's heads and body responses to begin with. Having a gun or any other weapon (pepper-spray, a handfull of keys, the spike from a high heel shoe., etc.) doesn't do squat without having awareness and consciousness to begin with. Also, learning to use anything for a weapon is extremely valuable, as is learning to SURVIVE an assault as opposed to dying. All steps are addressed.
@Broadway97209  @Michael La Maybe he likes his women week and vulnerable?
Â
I prefer my daughters to be able to protect themselves as needed since we are so week on our sexual crime laws.
Â
Unfortunately my eldest is not 21 yet so she can only carry a knife or pepper spray on campus to protect herself.
@Michael La You're one messed up fella who thinks women shouldn't be able to carry a tool (i.e. a firearm) for self defense... I mean, what if this was your loved one or daughter (whether you have one now or in the future)? Such a shame for them to have a husband or father like that.
@FreedomRocks  @Michael La  @Broadway97209 Looks like you found an echo chamber. You'll be happy now.
@Michael La Ok, so lets say she was cornered and this guy's telling her that he's going to rape and murder her, so it's very clear what his intentions are. Would you support her having the ability to carry a concealed firearm on campus so she can defend herself? If not, please explain.
@FreedomRocks  @Playanekes  @Broadway97209 "...like she should be...."   WTF??? you are BLAMING HER FOR BEING ASSAULTED??? None of you dudes ever bother to wonder what is WRONG with you all ignoring that all your MALE buddies having rapists amongst them, and wife-beaters as well. You ignore that the culture of men encourages this. Rape is not going to stop until MEN start to face the weirdness of harming women they two-facedly allow and encourage to bloom in their midst.
@Michael La Oh you can use Google and copy and paste? Wow...
@Playanekes  @Broadway97209 No she would do that long before that if she was aware of her surroundings at 3am like she should be.
Â
She could simply put her hand in your purse or jacket grabbing her gun and turn to the guy and ask him to back away and stop following her.
Â
If he continues to come at her pull the gun out of the purse or jacket and ask him to get away again.
Â
Just make sure he is 15-20ft away since that distance could be covered before you could draw and shoot. The tell cops if your attacked by a knife welding man you may end up dead if you don't shoot him before he gets closer then 20 ft.
@Broadway97209
Medicine
Hoplophobia is not a true phobia, and it is not recognized as a mental disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. The meaning and usage ascribed by Cooper falls outside of the medical definitions of true phobias. For example, phobias require that the person be aware and acknowledge that their fear is irrational, and usually causes some kind of functional impairment.[10] True medical phobias of firearms and other weapons can exist, but are unusual.[4] Touche'.
Â
@Michael La You've obviously never been a victim of a crime, Michael. I have, and with permanent disfigurement to boot, so I empathize what she's going through. Evidently you are hoplophobic and unable to carry on a logical and intellectual discussion on crime prevention and self defense.
@Broadway97209 @Michael La why a firearm and not a knife, baton, bat, pepper spray or some other weapon? He wasn't telling her he was going to rape and murder her so your point is theoretical at best. "You're going to kill me! Here, let me fish my pistol out of my purse and wave it around at you..."
@Broadway97209 OMG your FN insane. I don't think any rational person could have a discussion with you and your multiplex scenarios.
At least  Playankes could hold a good discussion he's a little more grounded in reality.Â
@Michael La "remembers a man following her"  -- She knew someone was following her, and had she been allowed by OUS to possess a weapon, she may have had a chance to ward off this threat instead of ignoring it. Think of the lady walking her dog at the park in longview who drew her weapon to ward off a crazy masturbating guy who approached her.
Â
BTW, no jury is going to convict a woman for brandishing considering she was in danger.
@FreedomRocks  @Broadway97209 Very good point sir, and how I hope my wife would do it.
@Playanekes  @Broadway97209  The law is more vague then provable danger so if she asked the guy to stop following and stay away and he did not she could and should pull her gun to convince him otherwise.
@Broadway97209 @Michael La she was only provably in danger after the fact. Anytime before that she would have been brandishing a weapon because some guy (he could have claimed) was just walking down the street behind her. It wouldn't work. BTW, the last time I was on campus I was carrying a .45.
