Student makes up false report of armed classmate at Newberg school
NEWBERG, Ore. – A student who called 9-1-1 Tuesday morning and said another student had a rifle inside a Newberg elementary school admitted to police that the report was false.
Police said the student made the call at around 10 a.m. and told the 9-1-1 call taker that a student had a rifle at Antonia Crater Elementary School. Three schools went into “lock out,” which means all the doors were locked and classes continued as normal.
Officers arrived at the school and learned the identity of the caller, who told police they made the whole thing up.
The “lock out” was lifted at 11 a.m. after police searched school buildings.
Police said they will have an increased presence Tuesday near all Newberg schools.
They said school staff, teachers and students “responded flawlessly during the event.”
The student’s age was not released.
Swatting the schools. Exploiting the new panic to delay that dreaded test.Â

instead of lock out at a school he shoould be locked down of a maximum security prison!
@Phuzz This is a kid, this school is K-5. I hope this scares him enough that he NEVER pulls a stunt like that again. But prison? It's a kid, as angry as I am about this happening at a school my grandchildren attend, I do realize it's a small child......you have to wonder what is wrong in this kid's life to do this. I'm just glad everyone is okay, and it wasn't a REAL gun or threat.
Maybe he was just testing the preparedness of the 911 systems ability to respond to his School.
I'm sure his/her defense attorney will put a spin on the action that it was done as a self-appointed school project to see what the response would be. Â
It, or they as the case maybe need to get more than a slap on the wrist for this one. In this case it is not just the simple misuse of 911, or a false police report, but borders on a terror act. I don't want to be too punitive.Â
Â
How about suspended until next fall and 200 hours of community service?Â
Â
I'm sure the kid(s) scared wee out of a few folks.
@WebFootSTi Not to mention the parents! I know my daughter was trying to remain calm, but I could hear the panic, the not knowing if your kids are safe, if there is a real threat......I just hope my grandkids were not terrified. They had to have been very frightened.
I realize they didn't want to reveal the gender of the caller, but the story says "they" made it up. Were there more than one involved?
@jpk The singular "they" is common and accepted in situations of indeterminate gender.
I know that, but in this case they chose not to make public the gender of the suspect! That's what I was griping about.Â
@jpk I think it is a misuse of pronouns, as is common on this site. Journalists are not journalists anymore.
My grandkids attend this school. Kids are all okay.
And just like that, his or her dreams of being inducted into the NHS were dashed.
@HenryBowman You mean "their dreams?" Oh, you didn't want to use bad grammar like katu?Â
Someone probably had a test or report due today which wasn't done or prepared for!
