Survey: Wash. tops seat belt use in nation

SEATTLE (AP) — A federal survey suggests that Washington state has the highest use of seat belts among drivers in the country.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ranked Washington at 97.5 percent seat belt usage in 2011. The lowest was Massachusetts at 73.2 percent of usage. The national average was 84 percent.
The state Patrol says it's the seventh year in a row Washington has score 95 percent or higher.
I remember the days when seatbelts were a option when biting a new car.

Seatbelt laws are there for a reason! Ask anyone who has been involved in a traffic crash who was able to survive due to proper use of safety restraints. Those Oregonians who self-proclaim freedom from legally enacted safety measures have only themselves to blame when preventable injuries harm them physically and financially. Â
@jpk "Those Oregonians who self-proclaim freedom from legally enacted safety measures have only themselves to blame when preventable injuries harm them physically and financially." Fine. You said it perfectly. Let's take our own responsibility. I do not need the government to tell me how to safely live my life. Perhaps you do. I do not.
I congratulate you for being safe, but most Oregonians are not. They get into their unlocked cars and head on down to the local Plaid Pantry and get themselves a big gulp, or ciggies, or beer, and then head on home. Sometimes they end up in the ER because they are not as conscientious as you.
No word of Oregon's percentage? Who cares about Massachusetts? This news is from an Oregon media outlet. Perhaps someone could have quickly found out our percentage of compliance? Too much work? Or time spent proofreading other articles? LOL Â
