Murder suspect arrested; Fritz Hayes to be remembered tonight
PORTLAND, Ore. – A white supremacist accused of stabbing a Lake Oswego man to death was arrested in Corvallis, Ore. Saturday, the Clackamas County Sheriff said.
Sheriff Craig Roberts said Erik John Meiser, 37, was spotted by a team of U.S. Marshals outside a Super 8 motel just after 2 p.m.
"We're thrilled to have him in custody," Robert said at a news conference. "All of us that have been involved in this investigation have had a major concern about somebody else getting hurt."
Meiser was taken into custody at gunpoint without incident, Roberts said. The U.S. Marshals were following up on a lead that Meiser was in Corvallis.
It wasn't immediately clear whether Meiser was staying at the motel. Investigators hope to figure out whether anyone helped him evade police.
According to a court document, Meiser was accused of murdering 57-year-old Fredrick "Fritz" Hayes in front of his wife Monday morning after burglarizing his Lake Oswego home.
Authorities said there was no indication Meiser and Hayes knew each other before the attack.
Hayes' wife and family were notified of the arrest. A family spokesperson released a statement after the arrest was announced:
"The Hayes Family is pleased with the apprehension of the suspect. We would like to thank all the city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies involved. We would also like to thank the community for their support of the family during this difficult time. The Hayes family asks that our privacy is respected during this time of mourning."
Family and friends of the Hayes family gathered for a private celebration of life on Sunday (right).
Monday at 7 p.m., there will be a public remembrance service for Hayes at the Lake Oswego Church of Christ.
The arrest ended a nearly week-long manhunt that spanned the West Coast. Authorities said Meiser was known to travel fast and efficiently and they believed he could be in another state.
Hayes' death terrified neighbors, and much of Portland was on heightened alert for the bearded man who police called dangerous.
Roberts said the sheriff’s office received hundreds of tips during the search for Meiser.
Authorities in Ogden, Utah, also have an arrest warrant for Meiser that accuses him of aggravated assault on Sept. 8. Ogden police said the victim's face was "severely slashed" with a razor-style knife and needed treatment at a hospital.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said Meiser's criminal history goes back to 1989.
According to the sheriff's office and court records, Meiser's long criminal history includes burglary in Minnesota as well as assault, property damage, and a violation of a restraining order. In Wisconsin there was disorderly conduct. In Colorado: attempted vandalism. There are more convictions in Arizona, California, Kansas, Nebraska, Nevada and Pennsylvania.
Other charges include cruelty toward a child, obscene phone calls, and ethnic intimidation.

Meiser has white supremacist tattoos, including one on his knuckles that spells out "Neo Nazi."
Public records indicate Meiser, when not behind bars, spent much of his life in Minnesota. Neighbors at a St. Paul address where Meiser lived in the 1990s said they couldn't remember him with certainty, but referred to the place where he lived as a "drug house."
With Meiser in custody, Hayes wouldn't be forgotten, Clackamas County Sgt. Adam Phillips said.
"It's the suspect that did the murder, but this is really about justice for Mr. Hayes," Phillips said.
Thank for for explaining what happened in the tragedy that happened to Fris Hayes and how the police were able to identify him so quickly. Â So sorry this happened in front of his wife and the fact it happened at all.
Â
Please refrain from showing criminal's face which is a shock everytime I inadvertantly see it. Â What reader wants or needs to see this criminal's face more than once? This is about Mr. Hayes.
Â
Heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and friends.
I am glad that he was caught, and I hope this time he will never walk the streets again. He looks evil! My thoughts and prayers are with the family!
Befoe this happened the dude was kicked off a Portland bound train in Montana for threating other passengers.
Guy looks like a real wiener.
Wait, don't tell me, the arrested has a "long criminal history" and was no doubt, "turning his life around".
What the media should be focused on (after the ratings grabbing sensationalism, of course) is: Why is this piece of human debris out roaming around, and, what idiot liberal judge keeps turning him loose. Trust me-that's where your problem is.
The article states that "The Hayes family asks that our privacy is respected during this time of mourning." Then they post a picture of "Family and friends of the Hayes family gathered for a private celebration of life on Sunday (right)." Privacy Respected? No!!!!
Nice to see the victims photo on the front page for a change, but then you click to this page and the creep is front and center. I WISH the news media would STOP showing faces of the creeps and instead the VICTIMS of crime.
Now they have to Prove he is guilty...guessing that will happen in a yr or two....he looks guilty....and ugly.....Good Job catching him !!!! Kudos.....
The saying is, "God works in mysterious ways". Its true in this case. Oregon State was playing football on the road this weekend. If they'd been at home in Corvallis this animal could have hidden out among the throngs of fans or perhaps relied on the fact that law enforcement is stretched thin on game days. Or both.Â
On the issue of capital punishment...there is an inmate in Ohio right now who is scheduled for execution 30 YEARS after he murdered an elderly woman. 30 years. He is appealing this on the grounds that he is too obese to be executed. Meiser won' t see the needle for decades, if he ever does. Oregon ain't Texas or Florida.
One final note: I always get a kick out of posters who claim that "Bubba will teach him to be his b**tch." Â I know several people in corrections. If this fairy tale makes you feel better, fine...but the people I talk to say prison today ain't like Shawshank Redemption. I know you HOPE this happens but it probably won't. Sorry
If this guy was an animal, a responsible society would have him  euthanized.
Hopefully this guy will stay in prision for life. May his family find some kind of peace with his arrest. Law enforcement did a great job of jumping all over this and bringing him in.
@Luckylucy Hopefully he'll stay in prison until he's executed, which is kind of the same thing.
Oh, he's going to get it! Nicely done, Marshals, and all those who gave the tips to the LE. Way to track him down!
Wow, I have trouble looking at his photo, his eyes are creepy
What would you bet that some liberal judge will hear this case, and not allow ANY of his past record to be admitted as evidence because he wasn't allowed to play little league baseball when he was a child, or some other BULL excuse! I still say, those, in his past, that turned him loose, especially after the last couple of felonies, should stand trial right alongside of him. Had they not turned him loose, he would not have murdered, so they HAVE to be accomplices! Loan someone the keys to your car, he does a crime, and you will be tried with him...so why do judges and parole boards get away with it.
Let's hope the revolving door of "in"justice is broken when they lock this guy up again. From the description of his record, it doesn't sound like this guy should have been out on the streets.
@I812 It truly is scary to think he could ever be out in society again. Some people need to be locked away for good.
A Gene Hackman movie quote sums it up: "We'll give him a fair trial - followed by a first class HANGING !"
Two of the responding police officers nearly caused car accidents on I-5 responding to this. Â I got a partial plate on one, started with a C and had 518 in the plate. Â Another vehicle was a brown ford truck. Â The brown truck passed us at WELL over 80 MPH driving on the I-5 gravel shoulder to the left of the passing lane. Â Rocks hit our window nearly breaking it and traffic was hitting their brakes in all three lanes from the gravel as this jerk flew past without any pause for traffic to respond. Â This guy should be suspended from duty for his dangerous driving. Â He almost got us killed responding to this incident and the guy wasn't even putting up a struggle. Â
@Chris S Chris: Did you not learn in drivers' training the reasons to pull to the right for emergency vehicles? Sorry you were so traumatized! Maybe you can go on Oprah now.
Were you looking in your mirrro on occasion to see if someone was coming up fast? Was any of the vehicles using emergency lights? I have witnessed some drivers when they see everyone pulling over for an emergency vehicle, for some reason they decide that means they can start passing everyone. The officers are trained to respond quickly. It was after the fact that the media mentioned he surrendered without trouble. Until that happened, there was probably a radio call out for possible backup. If people would pay attention to traffic 360 degrees around them, they probably would not be surprised by an emergency vehicle or other vehicle coming up behind them.
Â
@Chris SÂ Â Perhaps if people would move over when an emergency vehicle is blaring along in the fast lane so they can get to where they are going....get a clue, use your mirrors, and keep interior noise levels down so you can see and hear what is coming up behind you.
@Chris S Collateral Damage is of no concern to the government; they'd wipe out dozens if it meant getting this one guy.., who is obviously seriously mentally ill and was SET FREE by the exact same system that wanted him so bad...
@Chris S cry me a river and get over it! Of course you don't have any concern of capturing this monster, as it wasn't your spouse who was murdered. Put yourself in someone else's shoes.Â
@Chris S Glad you are safe!
@Chris S So file a claim with your insurance company.
it is really not necessary to quote someone if what they said makes no sense....like this:
Â
"It's the suspect that did the murder, but this is really about justice for Mr. Hayes," Phillips said.
Â
yeah, "it's" "about" the victim. We know that! Further, we know people are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, so the first part of the statement is goofy too. Just the same, I am glad he is behind bars.
Â
Why this guy wants to kill caucasian people as a "neo nazi" is one more thing that doesn't jibe!
@Philip Marlowe Sometimes those neo nazi tattoos are just a way to survive in prison. If he's identifying with neo nazis, then he has some credibility with that group in the prison system.Â

@HarryJuku This is not a cop show on your 52 inch plasma tv screen. Wake up and realize you are as helpless as anyone when confronted with a monster who has no conscience or soul. You sound like a 6 year old bragging that they aren't afraid of the dark. Â
@HarryJuku Somehow here you are blaming and shaming the victim, and that is in such poor taste that I don't even know how you began to think of posting it. My god, grow up. What do you think his family feels like when they read your posting? This poor Mr. Hayes was murdered and you weren't there so you don't even *really* know the details of how it happened, yet you have the audacity to say that "you could have done better, survived, and taken the murderer down". Bull crap.
@HarryJuku Well, look who's pounding his own chest and talking about how he could easily defend himself if he were confronted by a murderer. I seem to remember you taking issue with such bravado by advocates of concealed carry of a handgun. Rather hypocritical, aren't you?
So glad that they caught him, if it is the right person. Â Hopefully he will never have the chance to hurt another person outside of prison.
@stoneloc  Hopefully he will never have the chance to hurt another person.
Good job getting him off the streets before he did it again. With a life sentence, he will probably be off the streets for a couple of years.
May he have a short life then!
Hey gov K, here's another soon to be convicted murderer for you to commute to life in prison instead!
I hope they caught the right guy. I also wish they would tell us why he is the right guy. Not the only bad dude in and around Lake Oswego and this guy hasn't even been publicly proven to have been there. Catching the right murderer is very important.
@Bobby Milano Well, Bobby, I, also sure hope they didn't catch the wrong murderer. God forbid we put the wrong killer in jail! And , yes Bobby, there is a Santa Claus. Now just grab your Teddy Bear, put your jammies on, and do whatever Governor K says is right. You'll be fine, Bobby!
@Bobby Milano Well... I would think, that since Mr. Hayes was murdered right in front of his wife, they have a pretty good witness.
Hope they got the right guy. I still see know reports of actual evidence identifying him as the suspect other than prior criminal activity. There was another guy in the actual neighborhood living in his van who was supposed to be having partial custody of his Lake Oswego daughter and he hasn't been heard from since the incident. He also has a record of violent crime. Where did he go?
@Bobby Milano Maybe Meiser killed him, too.
Good job on the part of all LE involved in this.
I concur with the other comments re: the work of LEOs -- good job folks. I only wish he would have resisted arrest.. if you know what I mean.
I'd like to see what a "razor style" knife looks like. anyone know?
@swimmer Put in a link so you can see them....http://www.selfdefence.com/knives---swords-knives-razors.html
@swimmer I'm thinking like a box cutter maybe?
Why he was out walking the streets in the first place is beyond comprehension!!! Now maybe they'll
put him in a cage where he belongs!! Thank God he's off the streets!!!
@dianned Hopefully, a cage under ground somewhere.
What is the connection between Fredrick Hayes and Erik Meiser? I do not believe this was some ransom act of murder. He was arrested in so many other states and yet wound up here in Oregon to get arrested yet again.
@Joji They met just as Meiser was finishing up burglarizing the Hayes's home. He doesn't seem like the type that likes or needs to get to know you, before he kills you.
@Joji And Ogden,Utah also wants him for slashing someone's face also just before this..   I'd say it was just a matter of time.. and I'm glad they caught him as it would be just a matter of time before he killed or slashed again.
@Joji Did you mean "random act of murder"??? Whatever, I doubt that there is any connection between Meiser and Mr. Hayes, other than suspect and victim.
