MOUNT ANGEL, Ore. – Sheriff’s deputies and a Marion County SWAT team captured two men who they said broke into a home near Mount Angel and attempted to rob the residents.
Deputies were called to a home in the 8400 block of Mt. Angel Highway after a reported robbery around 1 a.m. Monday. The residents said two men, possibly armed with handguns, came to the home and tried to rob them, according to Sgt. Chris Baldridge.
The residents were not hurt. They escaped from the home and called 911.
Deputies captured one of the suspects after they arrived. The other man barricaded himself inside the house, Baldridge said.
Deputies called a SWAT team to the scene. After trying to negotiate with the suspect for nearly four hours, the SWAT team entered the home, but they did not find the suspect inside.
Deputies caught the second suspect one hour later on a neighboring property, Baldridge said.
Police arrested 23-year-old David Gonzalez and 25-year-old Richard Hess. Both men are from Woodburn. But according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, they were arrested on charges unrelated to the alleged break-in.
Gonzalez faces charges of second-degree burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and a felon in possession of a weapon.
Hess was arrested on two outstanding warrants: third-degree theft and possession of methamphetamine.
Both are lodged at the Marion County Jail.
Detectives are still trying to figure out why the two men attempted to rob the three people at the home. They would like to hear from anyone who may have seen Gonzalez or Hess. The Marion County Sheriff's Office tip line is 503-540-8079.
