VANCOUVER, Wash. - Police are investigating a suspicious death at a home in Vancouver.

Officers were initially called to a home in the 1000 block of West 12th Street on a report of an assault and that a man was either unconscious or dead inside a home.

Paramedics were dispatched to the scene and determined that the man, later identified as 48-year-old Michael J. Ellis, was dead. Investigators looking into the man's death noted that it appeared some type of struggle had happened inside the home.

"I'm an acquaintance with him," said Mesha Lawson, who lives across the street. "I don't know him at a personal level, but he was a very nice gentleman. He walked by all the time and complimented me on my garden. He was just generally a really sweet person."

An online search revealed that the address has been used by several sex offenders in recent years. Right now there are four sex offenders living on the block and 19 within a half mile.

No arrests have been made at this point and police have not identified a suspect in the case. Anyone with information that can help investigators is asked to contact Sgt. Scott Creager with the Vancouver Major Crimes Unit.
