Suspicious device attached to flag pole at closed high school
PORTLAND, Ore. - Portland Police officers blocked roads near Washington High School in Southeast Portland Monday morning after officers discovered a suspicious device taped to a flag pole.
The device turned out to be a hoax, police said.
Police located the device just after 4:30 a.m. Monday and decided to call for the bomb squad to deal with the device, which they did not describe in detail.
Police closed SE Stark Street between 12th and 14th Avenue while police worked at the scene.
The school was closed in 1981. Officials with Portland Public School also responded to the scene Monday morning.
Respectfully, I don't understand the criticism of the police in this incident in the comments in this thread. If they did nothing and it proved to be something dangerous causing others to be hurt then everyone would be screaming. I appreciate the extra caution they took to ensure it wasn't dangerous and that they weren't harmed in the process of investigating it. It's a sad statement of our times that we must be this careful, but it's the reality of today.
I could leave and empty shoe box on the curb and it would be classified as a suspicious device!
We have lost, terrorists won.
@Username ... and the one time they would ignore it it would be the real thing...it's a no win situation...
This shouldnt be news, but the police state never misses an oppertunity to remind you that you gave up your freedom for immagined threats.
The school was closed in 1981. HEY! Why doesn't the PSD sell this property and make some money, instead of paying out taxes on it? That would help their shortfall.Â
Â
Then again...would anyone buy it?
@washcomom Someone already bought it. Almost 5 of the 7.5 acres was sold to Parks and Rec several years ago.
PPS owns the brick school building, the land under it, and a small vacant lot on the opposite end of the parcel, none of which interests developers...uh, maybe due to the idea that Parks and Rec's intended use of their own property will likely be influencing factors on the city's yea/nay response to proposed use of adjacent/bordering properties.
Maybe?
Bet on it.

"would anyone buy it?
Â
Parks and Rec wanted to buy apples. PPS sold them a tree. So I guess the answer is: Yes
But the valid question is now this:Â Would anyone looking for land pay for the rotting fruit on it?Â
Â
Maybe, if they bring a tree that mingles well with Parks and Recs trees.

Thanks, all. I couldn't find out exactly where the line was from the PPS to the Portland P&R.Â

Sadly, Portland is making a "center of activity" and deletes anything outside of the 4 mile radius of downtown. "Out of sight, out of mind" does not help in Portland's outlook to other communities around the area, or to people who would like to do business in Portland, yet sees the poverty, the spoiled lands, and the lack of innovation and desirability in the areas. No wonder gangs are having a hey-day to create havoc.Â
 @washcomomÂ
Because my father once said, the only thing to go up in value as it ages is property.
Â
The school district loathes to sell property. The reason being at some point, they will likely need to buy it back. Also taxes on the property might be zero as I am not sure the city is required to pay tax to the state.
Â
In any case the school district often leases these building out to private teaching schools, or uses them as backups when another building becomes uninhabitable (like the kids who get bused to Rosa Parks because Marysville three years later has not been worked on).
@washcomom I signed in to type the same exact words..... You win. HAHAHA But seriously, they need to sell all the properties they own that aren't being currently used! Granted, it may just be a sort term suum of money but it may help them make it until a better budget plans is created and passed.
Panic !!! Worry !!! Fear !!!Â

Wait a minute, it was just the flag at half-staff on December 7th, and nobody knew their American history.Â
