Teen credited with saving a young drowning boy

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) — A 14-year-old Coos Bay teenager is being credited with helping save the life of a young boy, whose friend did not survive when they lost hold of a boogie board in a lake.

Austin Reed jumped into the Upper Empire Lakes on Monday when he noticed 8-year-old Kristian Croy and Jessie Kirk struggling to stay afloat.

The World newspaper reports the boys were in the middle of the Empire Lakes with Kristian's brother.

Austin was able to help Jessie make it safely to the shore.

Austin's father, Steve Reed, made several unsuccessful attempts to reach Kristian, who had disappeared beneath the surface.

Kristian's body was found Monday night.

Austin's mother, Maryanne Baker, says the teenager has had trouble sleeping since the incident.
