The name is in: Portland Thorns FC

Every team should have its name. And, as the song goes, every rose has its thorn.
The new professional women's soccer club will be named the Portland Thorns FC, officials announced Thursday.
In unveiling the name, Peregrine Sports LLC, the parent company of Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers, said the purpose of the name is to connect the new team to Portland's moniker as the "City of Roses."
"Portland Thorns FC quickly emerged as a natural choice that was appropriate for the city and the culture of Soccer City, USA," Timbers and Thorns president Merritt Paulson said in a statement.
The design of the Thorns crest came from Portland artist and local soccer supporter Brent Diskin. Also, city-inspired details of four-pointed stars with the letters "F" and "C" are a callout to the star prominent on Portland's official city flag.
Plans for a eight-team professional women's league were unveiled Nov. 21. The season will begin this spring.
Fans interested in putting down a deposit toward season tickets should contact the club's ticket office at 503-553-5555.
who cares? its just a stupid foreign sport! will they replace the trailblazers like the lame timbers did to 107 years of portland beavers history in portland?
i wish they would have went with the thorn instead of the thorns, like the standofrd cardinal. its not to late. they could just put duct tape over the s.
@Pixsure Syence Stanford Cardinal is a color, not a bird, hence the lack of the plural usage.
If they really wanted to name the team with the flavor of Portland..... I would humbly suggest
Â
the Portland Turf Munchers
the Portland LGBT's
or even the Portland Beavers
no!   the portland beavers were a baseball team in portland since 1903, do not shame that good name with the likes of soccer!
Horrible name, but no one cares. Women's soccer will not last in Portland. We need an NFL team here, but that will never happen. The best Portland could get would be an NHL team. The venue is already there. The Winterhawks draw well for a Jr. team. Let's put our efforts there!
@73challenger503 Recycling comments from 2011 with the word "women's" added in?
I laugh.Â
Portland Brambles would have been just as good, I guess. Shows the lack of regional possibilities.Â
I bet it won't even last as long as Portland's WNBA team did.

And the name then fits, as the lez are a thorn in our sides!

I bet it will be as exciting at the WNBA.
@Beergod Doubtful, men's soccer isn't as exiting as the WNBA
Portland Thorns... OK. That's not a bad name for a team. I'd like it a lot more if the Portland Thorns happened to be an MLB or NFL team though.
@shorin Too puny a town to rate MLB or NFL.
Portland is bigger than a lot of cities that have MLB or NFL.
Is this a joke? Â
What the hell is the "FC" for? When was the last time anyone saw the flag of Portland?
@oops I think it stands for Fat Chicks.
 @oopsÂ
Â
FC is for "Football Club"
Â
You can see it flying on front of City Hall and Portlandia.
Â
A prickly sort of name ....
@I812 Nah. That would be the men's team.
Cool name, keeping it real in Portland.
HA, HA, HA, HA, HA!!!!
Â
Really?
Â
One sec..... ok, no wait HA.... Ok Iâm good now.
Â
Thorns?
Â
Ok so not only is it Soccer (in the US), not only is it a women's sport, but to add additional weight to a team that won't last three seasons, they get a silly name?
Â
Good luck ladies.
Â
Maybe they can hang out with the minor league baseball Hillsboro team and lament getting a decent name.
Â
@Repoman You forgot something. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA The great game of chase.
Darn! I was hoping they would have picked "The Portland Weird".
@Dirtman That would have been ironically funny.
Great name..great conceptuals. Props to Snake Pliskin..errrr..Brent Diskin. Now..will this league have any shot (no pun intended) of making it? Probably not..especially if they play as bad as the Timbers.
Thorns FC, welcome to Portland!!
I'd argue that Sam Adams is the real thorn in our sides, exponentially expanding the parking meters, fluoridating our water, and of course, letting apartment complexes build without parking spots!
@portlandborn83 instead of jumping off the handle at every opportunity, try to educate yourself in regards to fluoride before hopping on the non-sensical anti-fluoride bandwagon.
@Montavilla I have educated myself. Have you done your research? I can send you tons of anti-fluoride info. Did you know that there has never been an independent study on the long term side effects of fluoride? Did you know that the US has not done any health studies on fluoride since the 1960s? Why has Austria, Japan, Hungary, India and many more nations banned fluoride in their water supplies?
@portlandborn83 Thanks for mentioning just a few of the awesome things that he's done.
@portlandborn83 Get over it already! Completely out of context and off-topic.
@pdxd  @portlandborn83 No, I'm good with his comments.
 @Muttley How nice for you.
