PORTLAND, Ore. – Want to get fired up for a fight? How about a pep talk from one of the most famous fighters on the planet?

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson showed up at Central Catholic High School on Friday to give a speech to the undefeated Rams ahead of their game against Barlow.

“He came and he talked about how there’s more to life than football,” said junior receiver Nate Schaffer. “He said he’s 47 now and his life went so fast.”

Schaffer said word began to spread among the Rams earlier this week that Tyson might make an appearance, but it wasn’t confirmed  until Thursday night. He said a former assistant at Central Catholic now works with Tyson and arranged the meeting.

The visit was kept quiet until word broke all over Twitter. Dozens of players sent out pictures with Tyson taken after his speech.

Coach Steve Pyne didn’t immediately return a call for comment Friday morning.

Schaffer said the scene was calmer than you might imagine.

“We were very quiet and focused because he’s Mike Tyson,” Schaffer said.
