Third-grade death threats spark controversy in Bandon
BANDON, Ore. (AP) — Some parents in the Bandon School District are upset because they were not told that a third-grade student wrote threatening notes.
Parents said the third-grader left notes in the desks of several fellow students in November, with messages such as 'You will die" and 'I'm going to kill you."
The teacher discovered the notes and referred the student to the principal.
The World newspaper of Coos Bay reports that more than a dozen parents complained at a school board meeting this week.
One parent, Dutch Hauser, alleged that the school principal tried to sweep the incident under the rug because the student's parent is on the school board.
Superintendent Dian Buche denied a cover-up, saying the district followed its safety procedures.

Well, kids will imitate what they hear / see on TV, in the movies, and what they hear or see adults or older kids do... a third-grader would be what... 8 or 9 years old..? Â Â So... old enough to have learned the basic right-from-wrong behavioral concepts; that is, if the parents have taught them to the kid...Â
Just based on the limited in in this story, this sounds kind of like a grab for attention by the kid who left the notes... but if I had a son or daughter in that class who received one of those notes, I would be seriously questioning why I was not told about it as soon as it happened... Â I wouldn't necessarily want to "do" anything about it, but I think that type of information needs to be relayed to the parents as soon as it is possible to do so...
At the VERY least, I would want to be able to talk with my son or daughter about the incident... Â I was never a "helicopter parent", but I think the school has a duty to keep parents informed about incidents that involve their kids; it shouldn't be up to the school to decide what is or is not important to the parents. Â Â
And a LOT of parents won't, or don't know how, to discipline thier kids, but woe to anyone else that might attempt to do the same thing. Then throw in extreme violent games where the name of the game is to kill evey kid or adult that comes in sight...no wonder there are threats and threats that are carried through on. The kids have no idea of consequences or reality!
Well, my boys have said "I'm going to kill you" when getting in a heated argument with their brothers, much like I did when I was kid, and how many kids do. Guess we should all be committed.
@OSUx2 Sounds like you had real caring parents...
What a joke. Â When I was this age, I and all of my friends routinely threatened each other. Â We were playing cowboys and Indians or war. Â It was part of the fun. Â Now fun isn't allowed anymore. Â The problem here isn't the kid, it's the parents, and not just his parents. Â Kids learn from their parents and other adults. Â This just proves a lot of parents and adults shouldn't have kids. Â Kids are mostly innocent until the adults screw them up.
I'm really starting to wonder if 3/4 of the "news" we read happens because someone, somewhere knows that we will all be reading it?  Why in the world can't this be dealt with on a local level without it leaking to the press??  The time is going to come when all of our kids will be rolling around in hamster balls with proximity sensors and GPS tracking beacons.   This is out of control.  I shudder to think where this world will be in three generations.  We will all have built in hand sanitizors that squirt out a mist of protective crap when a foreign contamnant is in proximity to our person,,,,,sheesh.  Remember the days when discipline was handled by the parent?  Â
@SrianB Most parental units have become too dysfunctional to accept responsibility for their seed...
The Lib's have accepted that Obummer will take care of everything by paying for everything. So, why not let him diss-cipline our kids as well...
Â
Liberaism; the disease we keep paying for and paying for and paying for and, wait, 30 million illeagles...? let's pay for them as well... yee hooo...!!!

While I agree with your first sentence, everything else you say indicates you're a moron.
Let's see, an adult hopes a school is shot up on Facebook and no charges are filed. Kids get busted with toy guns and people go into an outrage over the "stupid" schools and their "stupid" rules. So what's the big deal about some death threats? It's obvious that no one takes kids doing things like this seriously.
Sure hope that notification and discipline were not circumvented because of the parent's position on the school board!
@jpk It sure looks like that happened.
So the district safety procedures state that it's okay not to inform the parents of the children who were threatened? Well, that's brilliant. They have a right to know that their children are being threatened, no matter how old the person threatening them is.
Â
That child obviously needs some attention, from a professional psychiatrist... amongst other things. I'd be interested to know what sort of punishment was given to the child anyway.
@advocatus diaboli And spanked but oh you can't do that anymore!
@Jim330rifle  @advocatus diaboli When a 3rd grader makes death threats, it's a pretty safe bet that spanking or worse has already been a part of his life.
@Jim330rifle  @advocatus diaboli For get "spanking " +evil grin+ how about Manual labor?
Must be raised by Liberal parents
@Laughing at Liberals Why do you laugh at yourself?
@Mikey @Laughing at Liberals Mirror mirror on the wall Quit looking at me???
@Laughing at Liberals Curious as to what would cause you to make such an ignorant assumption. Then again ~ considering the extent of your obvious ignorance.... I don't really want to know. The kid needs a good azz-whoopin' ~ as well as significant counseling. There is absolutely NO excuse for parents of the other children not to have been notified. I would be tearing some major AZZ at the district office if my child went to school there.Sincerely,A Liberal Parent... of a responsible and caring 12 year old
