WOODBURN, Ore. – Residents of the Park Avenue Apartments in Woodburn said the sounds of cracking wood helped them run for cover before an oak tree split in two and crashed down on their building.
“We kept hearing these cracking noises and we thought somebody was on the other side of the fence doing something,” said Sharon Munoz. “Then all of the sudden the crack got louder, and we looked and the whole section of tree just fell down.”
No one was hurt. The few seconds of warning was enough for everyone to get out of the way.
The tree was so large that crews had to use heavy equipment to lift the pieces from the top of the building.
Witnesses said the tree's smaller branches helped cushion the fall. The tree split in two because it was rotten.
The apartments had recently been renovated.
