Tree falls on couple in car: 'I just remember chaos'
CANBY, Ore. – Chris Natelborg said the minutes seemed like hours as he and his wife Tymona waited for help.
The couple had just parked in front of Tymona’s parents’ house when 100-foot tall tree crashed down on their car Sunday afternoon.
“I just remember chaos after that,” said Chris Natelborg. “With the windows shattering and the roof coming down. Disbelief in my head, like, is this a dream?”
The tree’s roots were rotten. A gust of wind knocked it over.
Chris fractured his shoulder, but that was the worst of their injuries.
“My chest was on the center console,” he said. “The roof was on my back, so just enough room for my torso to fit in there and Tymona was on the floor. She had her seat belt off so she was able to get on the floor quick.”
They called 9-1-1 from the car. Rescue crew members pulled them out through the passenger side window.
Chris said it was all over in about ten minutes.
“It felt like an eternity while we were in there,” he said.
Chris said he didn’t usually park his car in that particular spot in front of his in-laws’ house. This time though, he was glad he did.
“We’re just thankful that normally, where the tree fell, my brother and his wife park there with my nieces on Sundays, and they were late. So I’m glad it didn’t fall on them,” he said.
“We’re just thankful. Counting our blessings for sure.”
Yeah, I still don't see how anyone survived that. Amazing.

Truly amazing that they walked away from that. You can clearly see in the picture that the passenger seat is still completely intact and doesn't look like it even moved an inch, the car just caved in around it... like it should.

When you own a property with trees that massive you need to have them checked regularly (for disease and rot) to ensure that this doesn't happen.Â
Wrong answer! There should be no tree so large near ones house that should it fall can land on the house. The correct answer is to REMOVE such trees immediately if not sooner. There is no way to tell with any degree of certainty that a tree will not fall... perfectly heathy trees fall all the time, tree roots don't go nearly so deep as folks think and much depends on soil type, the sandier the soil the more likely a tree will topple. Have a professional remove all large trees near your house, and do NOT attempt this yourself. There are lots of beautiful trees that can be panted hear houses because they simply don't grow large. It's relatively inexpensive to have trees removed well before the windy/stormy season when tree removal companys don't have much work, however once a stormy season approaches the tree removers become opportunists and you can't blame them. There 's so much on the news about storm damage from trees and yet people don't learn, more than half the damage is easily preventable if folks would only remove all large trees that should they fall can damage property... no different from all those folks who build homes in forest fire zones, they build right up to the tree line, they leave no treeless/brushless buffer zone, minimally a buffer zone should be 200'. And local goverment and utility companies are grossly remiss in not clearing large trees along roadways and utility easements, they steal your money for their personmal pleasures rather than perform vital services. But still people need to take care of themselves for no one else will... remove those large trees, NOW! In the NE now is a great time to have trees removed, the trees are leafless, and the weather is colder, it's less laborius to do that strenuous work in cooler weather, and thee isn't much work fo rthe tree removers now, they'd much rather have a job at a much lower rate than for them and all that expensive equpment to sit idle... late fall and late spring is the least expensive time in the NE to have trees removed.
@Sheldon You're not from around here, are you?
Seeing this makes me cringe... I think if they were 2 seconds later pulling into that spot, the outcome could have been so much worse!Â
the tree just wanted to hug the humans back
It is truly a miracle that the couple survived! How Chris only had a fractured shoulder (ouch!) and no one had a head injury, or died, is just AMAZING!Â
Â
Speedy recovery to you both!
