Empty pickup truck hits school bus in Gaston

GASTON, Ore. – One child was hurt when an empty pickup truck rolled down a street and collided with a school bus carrying 15 children in Gaston Monday morning.
The crash happened on Highway 47 near Park Street at around 8:40 a.m.
One child's parents took their kid to the hospital, according to Gaston Rural Fire District spokesman Ken Bilderback. The child’s injuries were not life-threatening. No one else was seriously hurt.
The other 14 kids on the bus, who ranged in age from 6 to 17, were transferred onto another school bus and taken to school.
It is unclear what caused the truck to begin rolling.
The highway was closed for about an hour after the crash.
hmm aren't we suppose to turn our wheels and place the e-brake on and make sure we are in park before leaving the vehicle?
I'm just curious as to why so many children and kids were on the bus together. Â Was it "Take Your Goat To School" day?
Â
Ty to be more professional, KATU. "Kid" is slang and is an inappropriate substitute for the proper word. Please recast the sentences using journalistic standards.Â
What I can't figure out is why no political troll has posted yet to blame some political party or politician for this
Ops...set the e-brake!
Â
When I was a kid I was playing on the street and all of the sudden the telephone poles went crazy, the wires were bouncing, I thought it was an earthquake (but since the ground wasn't shaking I had no clue). I ran in the house, it stopped and I went back outside totally baffled. Then the girl next door came outside and said "where's my car?" We lived on the top of a hill but it was just slopped enough that a stick left in neutral (without the e-brake on) would roll away, and it did. It rolled about 100 yards down the hill and hit a telephone pole cable anchor, hence shaking all the poles up the hill. Good thing it was there, it would have hit a house had it not been there.....crazy. I learned a valuable lesson thanks to someone elses mistake.
@deejm2112 e-brake and you're supposed to turn your tires one way or the other depending on if you're uphill or downhill.
@leapfrogger Yes, so your tires would bump the curb and stop the car from rolling, assuming there's curbs there.
KATU: Sorry, more pickiness. "One child was taken to a hospital by their parents," Child (singular) is either referred to in the third person possessive as either "his" or "her." Children (plural) may be taken to a hospital by their (plural) parents, but a child may be taken to a hospital by his or her parents.

Let's keep the bar high, shall we?
@Altazi I think if you are looking for correct grammar, spelling, and actual journalism on this website you will more often than not be disappointed.Â
@Altazi I agree that the pronoun game is silly, but I think in this instance, the article is unclear to keep the child's identity safe....maybe, I dunno
@Altazi Good observations, but I'm afraid the bar is already at shin level for katu.com.
Dear KATU staff: I was confused by the headline. The term "ermpty," when applied to a vehicle designed for hauling things, says to me that the vehicle had no payload. I think the term "driverless" is much more appropriate in this case, don't you?
They could have said "Loaded" but then we'd all be wondering how you get a pickup drunk. :)
What is it with these poor school buses lately? Â Â Seems like they've been involved in a lot of crashes... more so than usual... maybe they need to change the color so they're not such great "targets"... Â :-)
Â
Very happy this particular crash didn't result in any deaths or serious injuries - could easily have been a lot worse then this..! Â Â
Gaston would have a "Super Market" rather than a "supermarket".
@felines99 No, Gaston would have a "Pretty Good Grocery".
@Festivus  @felines99 Not according to the sign in the picture, but I get your humor.
Thank goodness no one was killed!
There is a very steep hill on that side of town. The other side is flat land. Used to be onion flats. There was good employment working in the onion business many years ago.
@Yamhill354 And before it was the onion flats it was Wapato Lake. I don't think they had many trucks rolling down hills back then.
@JTesla  @Yamhill354 Before?  It becomes Wapato Lake again every time we get an inch of rain. Â
Â
I still want to talk to the mutton head who convinced the school district to move the varsity baseball field down into the Tualatin flood plain.
@Festivus @JTesla @Yamhill354....yeah, and speaking of baseball, how long do you think the cease fire between the Israelis and Palestinians will last?
"On a hill or incline, one is served well by engaging the emergency brake"
@disgustedman ~  And by curbinjg the front wheels...!
@margay1 @disgustedman....I always make a point of flattening my tires when parked on a hill as well.
Yep! Forgot that!
"Itâs unclear what caused the truck to begin rolling."

My money's on gravity
 @Solipsist01Â
Only a fool would bet against that.
