MADRAS, Ore. -- Two men died and a woman was taken to the hospital after a head-on crash on Highway 97 Friday afternoon.
State police said a line of cars began passing a commercial truck by driving in the oncoming lane of the two-lane highway about seven miles north of Madras. One of the passing cars, driven by 91-year-old Warren Ward of Chula Vista, Calif., didn't have enough room to make it past the truck and hit an oncoming SUV head-on.
Police said the driver of the SUV was Harold M. Curtis of Antelope, Ore.
Both drivers died at the scene. Police said they were both wearing seat belts.
A female passenger in one of the cars was taken to a Madras hospital. She's expected to survive.
Police said one of the cars caught fire after the crash. Crews closed down part of the highway for a few hours.
