Two sought in Salem hit-and-run that killed 68-year-old woman
SALEM, Ore. – Police in Salem are looking for two people in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman and injured her son Thursday night.
The crash happened at around 10:45 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Lucky Fortune Restaurant at 1401 Lancaster Drive NE, police said.
Tom Cheung, 37, and his 68-year-old mother, Kow Lan Cheung-Lin, were hit by a Ford Focus. The family owns the Lucky Fortune Restaurant.
Kow Lan Cheung-Lin was taken to a Salem hospital where she died from her injuries. Tom Cheung’s injuries were minor, police said.
Police said the car was abandoned not far from the restaurant.
Saturday, police identified the alleged driver as 26-year-old Brandon Paine-Smith of Salem. He’s described as a white man who is 6’ tall and weighs 200 pounds. He has a brown crew cut and blue eyes.
The passenger was identified as 20-year-old Kayla Jo Holden of Salem. She’s described as a white woman who is 5’4’’ tall and weighs 155 pounds. Police said she has shoulder-length brown hair and hazel eyes. Her hair was dyed red at the time of the crash.
Paine-Smith has a felony warrant for parole violation and Holden has a felony warrant for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, police said.
Anyone with information about Paine-Smith or Holden’s location is asked to call 911.
shes already wanted for a felony of unauthorized use of a vehicle ....mind you she had fta's on that felony and here 8 days prior to this she was charged with possession of heroin....Hello out there...if she didnt show for the first felony charge why was she released after getting caught with heroin...shes a flight risk should have been held w/o bail...dont ya think? the judgicial system failed misserably on this case for sure.
Sometimes you wonder why people who commit crimes are not in custody and allowed to roam free? Both have felony warrants! Both should have been in jail somewhere and the woman might have stayed alive! But I guess judges have their agendas also, as did the parole board in granting release. Makes you wonder what kind of record or wants people have when you meet them on the street!
Oh, so both suspects had warrants per the update? Surprised they didn't stick around?

This kind of thing is getting out of hand here in this area.. Maybe we need to give out some hefty prison sentences to make folks realize you have to stop when you hit someone.. .

No one on this forum would stop either if they were under the influence, wanted by the law, or had something on them that was against the law, such as drugs, illegal weapons, Â etc. Â You would run for your life, not caring about what you had done, because at that moment your life is worth more than theirs. Â No one wants to go to jail, whether it's the first time or the tenth time, so yo will do whatever it takes to prevent it. Â Luckily for us, most of the time it doesn't work that way.

@Shadow This wasnt a typical hit and run accident. They ran over her 2 times for gods sake. They werent running from police at that time. They just didnt want anyone to try to stop them from leaving

You know the driver has no class when the media puts up mug shots of the people police are looking for.
I wish the media would give up on the term "hit and run". The appropriate title is "Failure to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons" ORS 811.705 and it is a Class B Felony. The vehicle under the control of an operator hits the victim, then continues driving away without stopping. I can visualize someone smacking someone in the mouth and then running away on foot. What these folks did was not hit and run, but cause injury and leave the scene!Â

Are these prior booking photos, or DMV photos? If they know who they are, they should be out tracking them down and getting them IMHO. Obviously with a UUMV warrant out for her, Kayla Holden will no longer look like that photo, and certainly not be where she used to live! I hope they catch these two, arrest and lodge them, and not allow them to get released on recognizance, but ask for a high bail amount. Â Â Â
@jpk The photos appear to be booking mugs.  The standard DMV DL photo normally has the aqua blue background. The photos above don't have it.

All these comments are directed towards the people who committed this aweful crime. It would be nice for once to see a complete forum of comments directed at the victims and their families. Again we seem to spend so much time talking about the criminals, when the only people who need the support are the victims and their families. Imagine a horrible event involving your family, where maybe one or more were killed. You then go to the internet to look for more information and all you see are posts about the criminals. Who is more important? Let's take a minute and re-evaluate our priorities.
