Two survive training flight crash
HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a pilot on a training flight at a Washington County airport aborted a takeoff after a door opened, and the plane crashed.
The Washington County sheriff's office says the plane went over an embankment at the end of the runway Monday afternoon at Twin Oaks Airport.
It wound up 30 feet short of the Tualatin River.
Neither the pilot nor the instructor was hurt. The sheriff's office says the plane was so heavily damaged it is considered a total loss.
The pilot was identified as 26-year-old Lars Ljungqvist of Gaston, on his first flight on a multi-engine airplane. The instructor was identified as 42-year-old Kathleen Mikitka of Hillsboro.
Hey,Â
Do not dis on Lars Larson.. If he was flying he's probably be smart enough to know what to do if a door pops opened on takeoff.. If you are to far into the takeoff past the abort point you do not try to land, you continue to fly the plane, wait it out carefully shut the door once airborne at a safe altitude. (Flying basics 101) I had a door open up on me in a Cessna 150 during my FAA check ride. I did not panic, I waited until the plane was up at patter alt, then shut the door, easy deal.
One of the more unusual airports you will ever fly in/out of.

@lousecrapton Shouldn't it be 'liars liarson" or do you think he lives with lions?
And Twin Oaks flight training strikes (the ground) again...
pull over we gotta close the door!
Well, I'll bet he doesn't make THAT mistake again!
Doors don't just open by themselves. Something else is going on here, and no, I'm not discounting the possibility of a GHOST.
@Oregon7812Â I agree.... Must've been that thar sequestration!Â
FAA budget cuts, dont 'cha know?
Actually, yes they can for many reasons. Human error, mechanical failure.
@Oregon7812 Doors open in small airplanes when a piece of belt or the corner of a coat gets stuck in them. I've had doors pop open on Cessnas, Pipers and a Grumman Tiger.
Typically the procedure is to circle around and land the airplane if the door won't close on its own but obviously they tried to abort the flight and ran out of room. Not even sure why this is newsworthy since it never left the airport and nobody was hurt.
@Playanekes @Oregon7812 I just make sure the doors are closed.

@Molly Head @Playanekes @Oregon7812 '8' dead now. Turns out the sequestration was even worse than Harry imagined.
@Playanekes @Oregon7812 Usually surviving a plane crash involves the plane being in the air. Ha Ha Ha. Next the pilot wants to learn how to drive a car.
@Oregon7812 yes they do....if not shut properly
