'We have, at least, some kind of relief in our hearts'
GRESHAM, Ore. – The family of a girl who fell into the Clackamas River and was swept away one week ago thanked everyone who was involved in the search for their daughter’s body.
A volunteer searcher found Vinesa Snegur’s body Saturday. It was later recovered by Clackamas County Search and Rescue.
Vinesa’s father, Igor Snegur, thanked authorities and volunteers Sunday for helping find his daughter.
“We have, at least, some kind of relief in our hearts,” said Igor Snegur. “But it’s still very, very difficult to be in this situation and I’d say we are going through (the) most difficult times in our lives.”
Vinesa fell into the river on Sunday, Jan. 22 while playing in the snow with her parents about 30 miles east of Estacada, Ore. The family had to drive 7 miles to the Ripplebrook Ranger Station to call for help because there is no cellphone service in the area.
Volunteer searcher Valeriy Kulikov found Vinesa’s body.
“When I found the body, I couldn’t believe it, that this is a human body,” said Valeriy Kulikov. “It was really hard to even see that.”
Speaking through an interpreter, Kulikov said he’s relieved Vinesa’s parents will get the closure they need.
“Very important especially for Russian culture to found the body and have a regular funeral.”
The church has set up a fund for the Snegur family. Donations can be made to any Chase Bank to “the Home of God Church for Vinesa Snegur” fund. Donations will help pay for funeral costs and other expenses.
The Home of God Church will hold a funeral later this week.
“May God bless all of you who at least prayed for us,” said Igor Snegur. “And keep praying.”
