Hillsboro's former police chief gets $67K severance

HILLSBORO, Ore. - Hillsboro's former police chief has resigned with a hefty payout.
The Oregonian reports Chief Carey Sullivan received more than $67,000 in severance pay.
The newspaper questioned the city manager about why Sullivan was paid the money. The chief was only supposed to receive a severance if he was fired without cause or if the city manager asked him to resign.
All parties involve claim Sullivan resigned voluntarily.
City manager Michael Brown said he agreed to the payout "in the spirit" of the chief's contract.
I have known Carey for a long time. He is a selfless hard working and dedicated person. What a bunch of cynics on here. We are so quick to pass judgement on others yet how often have we said to others, "they don't know what it is really like" and "no one really appreciates what I do" when speaking of ourselves. At worst, uou could at least give in the benefit of the doubt. Isn't that what you'd want someone to do for you?
Try walking in his shoes and those of others of similar jobs. You wouldn't last 1 day even if they paid you  twice as much.Â
Entirely too much envy out there.
DIRTY DIRTY DIRTY COP!Â
That's all I've got to say about him....
I looked up "in the spirit " and it means because we drink whisky and snort coke together, shhhh. I was really surprised , I had no idea .  Now more important things , due to the budget we need to raise Utility fee's.

One of the problems with the culture of government employees is they are never shy about spending someone else's money; even if it is just for their own convenience. There are plenty of high ranking government "managers" that should be fired including those who approved the wind farm tax subsidies at the State and those who were asleep while Tri-Met drivers were working 20-hour shifts. This guy apparently ruffled the union's feathers which is probably a good thing.
Everyone who lives in Washington County should be ANGRY over this and demand an answer. "In the spirit" is a BS excuse, this absolutely IS hush money.
Good for himÂ
Whatever he did or whatever he information he is holding over the police department/City must be pretty damn embarrassing for somebody that is still there at the department because the City has made a pretty hefty investment to keep it quiet.Â
Clearly, his pension remains in tact and he's eligible for another government job somewhere else.
I wonder if I resigned from my gov't job if they would give me a $67k severance? Likely not. The world isn't fair I guess.
Don't worry folks, this is just hush money.
@portlandborn83 Yep been telling the kids that for years. Life is not fair get used to it...
Oh come on, it's not like it's your money. What was that?
In the spirit must be the new term for it's not my money so I don't care.
Odd, you mean, I could get a job, and then resign, and walk away with severance? I want that job!!!
Easy come, easy go.
Fark "In the Spirit". One doesn't have to wonder too long why the government can't balance a budget do they?
Because the only people involved are morons apparently.
Wasn't there something "in the spirit" of hs contract about doing a good job as Police Chief? I guess keeping in the spirit only matters when you get to waste a whole bunch of money.
REALLY, REALLY??? This moron leaves HPD in a trail of destruction and Mr.Brown gives him $67,000 "in the spirit" of the chiefs contract??? What is going on here??? Does Mr. Brown not think that the $67,000 might have paid for another officer, raises for those officers who are making a ridiculously low salary for their "thankless", "dangerous" job?? There is more than meets the eye here and the tax payers deserve an explanation of this moronic decision as do the other dedicated officers of HPD!!
malfeasance.
