Woman, 18, seriously injured 2 days after graduating high school

TURNER, Ore. -- Two days after graduating from high school, an 18-year-old woman was seriously injured Friday morning after her car was T-boned by a passing truck.

Lindsey R. Magnusson, 18, of Aumsville was rushed to Salem Hospital with injuries that police said were life-threatening. She was later transferred to Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) in Portland.

Magnusson, who graduated from Cascade High School Wednesday night, was driving her younger brother (also a student there) to the high school when the crash happened in front of the parking lot, Marion County sheriff's deputies said.

Deputies were called to the school on 70th Avenue Southeast just after 8 a.m. They learned that Magnusson was leaving the school from the south parking lot in her Honda Accord when, suddenly, she was struck on the driver's side by a pickup truck driving south on 70th Avenue.

“We want to thank our family and friends for their outpouring of support for our daughter Lindsey after the wreck today that left her injured," Magnusson's family said in a statement. "We don’t know what the next few days will bring, but we appreciate everyone’s love and support. We know that Lindsey would want your thoughts and prayers."

"I just love her and the school loves her and the teachers and the administration and everybody's pulling for this little girl," said Kathleen Johnson, Magnusson's former cheerleading coach.

The driver of the Dodge pickup, Audrey Briggs, 31, of Lafayette also was taken to Salem Hospital with minor injuries. Her two young passengers weren't hurt in the crash.

It was not immediately revealed what caused the crash, but deputies noted that Magnusson was turning east into the rising sun when she was hit by the truck, according to a Marion County Sheriff's Office news release.

Counselors will be on hand at the high school as well as Turner Elementary School, where Magnusson's mother is a teaching assistant.
