Woman, 20, critically hurt in SE Portland crash
PORTLAND, Ore. – A 20-year-old woman was critically injured when the car she was riding in crashed into a tree in Southeast Portland Saturday night.
It happened in the 11100 block of Southeast Market Street at around 8:45 p.m., police said.
Investigators learned that the Volvo C70 convertible was heading westbound on Market Street when it failed to negotiate a left turn. The car hit one tree and snapped a second tree, police said.
Marissa Ann Conklin, 20, was thrown from the car during the crash. Police found her about 70 feet away from the snapped tree. She was taken to a Portland hospital with critical injuries.
Police said three other people were in the car during the crash. Eric Manuel Tarasov, 18, and Davontay Mosley, 17, were not hurt in the crash and remained at the scene. A fourth person ran away from the scene before police arrived. It’s unclear if he had a role in the crash. He has not been identified.
Investigators don’t yet know who was driving at the time of the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information about the fourth person is asked to call Officer Chris Johnson at 503-823-2213.
Sadly, the young lady died from her injuries. So I hope that the driver is charged with manslaughter
I would like to put out a warning for friends and family of the persons in this story. DO NOT READ Some here are so heartless, ruthless, no compassion and some just know it alls, Reading will warp you as it did me. PLEASE DO NOT READ ON It will only hurt
@Bert It seems like it should be common sense by now to avoid reading any articles about your family dying.  People who comment on articles like these usually aren't nice.
Her co-worker (and friend) posted at KGW that she was the driver. Some other sources stated that she drove very fast (I myself doubt that she could make 100 mph at SE Market) and didn't use the seatbelt. Too young to die, RIP young lady.
@tptpttp Kgw said it was a mustang and if you just go and ignore stop signs I can see it
No seatbelt and speeding. The speed limit on Market is 25.
Lots more to come over this incident like manslaughter charges?
That strikes me as a very odd choice of vehicle for kids that young. Wonder if it was stolen? That could account for the missing fourth.
no seat  belt and 70 ft away.  She should be charged with leaving the accident
She already passed away more than 6 hrs ago. Your joke was a bad one.
@Leinenkugle's ~  No longer matters, at least for her... it was reported several hours ago (KPTV) that Miss Conklin died... Â
Kgw reports the car was a mustang convertable and going at 100 mph- once again lower the speed limit to 5 mph and save lives
@Bert Lower the speed limit to 0mph nationwide and no one will die on the roads.
@Unknown @Bert They will by bicycles because they have "rules of the road diplomatic immunity"
Wear seatbelts, folks... they are there for a reason..
Rest in peace, Melissa Conklin... Condolences go to her family and friends for their loss...
Very sorry for the young girl and her family, Probably russians driving an unsafe rebuilt car, just like all of the rebuilders they sale on Craigslist.
@squiggy2u Is that why the engine left the car? Like the Russian meteorite that broke
@squiggy2u and the new neighborhood bikes stolen in Battle Ground.  They strip and repaint them.
According to KPTV story updated at 12:15 pm, she died. Sad to die so young.
@leapfrogger ~  Very sad news... at 20, your life is supposed to be ahead of you; not over... Â
George -Â watch out for that tree
There is a reason the law requires seat belts in cars and occupants to use them. Some people still don't get it.
Volvo. That explains it. Volvo drivers exist in their own little world.
Don't believe me? Just follow one around sometime. :-P
And still no cry to outlaw cars...
this is tragic, and we all hope these things could be avoided. Â I hope everyone involved recovers to a full and happy life.
How does a car, fail to Negotiate? looks like driver error.
I hope the young woman who was thrown from the car will recover from her injuries...Â
"A fourth person ran away from the scene before police arrived. Itâs unclear if he had a role in the crash." Â (from the story) Â Â
I'll take a wild guess here that person #4 was the driver..??? Â
@margay1Â #4 probably had drugs on them or something and knew that there's no penalty for a passenger running away.
Her co-worker (and friend) posted at KGW that she was the driver. I don't mean to post, just try to provide some information. At first, I thought the one that ran away was the driver too.
Person #4 probably was wearing a seat belt.
