Woman and granddaughter, 8, seriously hurt in crash

BANKS, Ore. -- A woman and her granddaughter were seriously injured Sunday afternoon in a single vehicle crash on Highway 6 west of Banks.

The crash happened at 4:20 p.m. The 66-year-old woman, Shirley A. Powers of Tillamook, was driving her Ford Focus east on the highway when she drifted into the oncoming lane, narrowly missed a bridge structure and went off the road and down a 20-foot ravine, according to Oregon State Police troopers.

Passersby stopped and helped the 8-year-old girl, Grace Powers, free herself from the car. Firefighters had to cut Shirley Powers from the car.

Both people were taken to a Portland hospital with serious injuries.

It was not clear what caused Powers to lose control of the car, troopers said.
