"There were signs," acid hoaxer says in new tell-all book
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The introduction of Bethany Storro's book describes how her mental illness "snuck up on her so severely."
"There were signs, but being a people pleaser, not wanting to be a burden on anyone and living with a hearing impairment all contributed to my tendency to ignore them," Storro wrote in her new book called "Facing the Truth."
The Vancouver woman who burned her face with drain cleaner and claimed to have been attacked has written a book about the hoax.
The Columbian reports Bethany Storro wrote the book with Portland-area co-author Mona Krueger. A news release says the book will "take the reader through a maze of mental illness to uncover the history leading up to the tragedy."
Krueger on Monday released an excerpt of the book's introduction to the media. The book begins: "I, Bethany, am publishing this book not to gain attention nor sympathy, but for two reasons. One is to tell my story. The other is to bring awareness about BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), so that others may seek help for healing."
The introduction says Storro now has come to terms with her mental illness. She apologizes "for the people that I hurt, misled or caused trouble for."
Storro attracted national attention in August 2010 when she said a stranger threw a cup of acid in her face. She accepted donations from sympathetic people before she admitted to detectives she had made up the story.
Storro pleaded guilty to making a false statement to a public official and was sentenced to community service and ordered to continue mental health treatment.

i see she's not getting enough attention again.....maybe we should lock her up,she will get lots of attention there.
I guess she was going to find a way to make her attention-whoring working one way or the other. Schizophrenia is a disease - this is being a dumbass.
I am strong advocate for mental illness awareness, if she truly is repentant of her hoax and wanted to make mental illness more understandable, she should be doing this for free.
A lot of commenters are wondering what publisher would have published this book. My bet is that it is self published. I have a writer friend and she tells me self publishing is now considered viable. Sometimes a self published book is popular and then the author gets noticed and "picked up". I doubt that this subject will be one that people will be anxious to read, but I also think that Body Dysphoria is a real thing and many people suffer from it. The book is obviously part of her healing process, and whether or not it sells is not as important as the fact that she has confronted her own actions. In this day and age of people who have no moral compass at all, I give her credit for coming clean and trying to help others. She was wrong, she harmed herself and others and now she wants to step up to the plate. She'll come here and read these comments and likely feel some hurt. I hope she reads this one, because I wish her well and I congratulate her on her progress. People can change. People are capable of redemption.Â
Since she wants to shed light on mental illness she should donate all proceeds of the book to a mental health charity.Â
Have fun looking in the mirror for the rest of your life you attention .....
By the looks at the comments it appears as though this young lady won't be making money off this hoax this way either.. And that's a good thing ....
Disappointed that KATU is promoting her book. I hope nobody buys it. She doesn't deserve to make money off of this.
 @HuskyKMA She's determined however !
The book cover looks so good, someone must have spent a lot of time in Photoshop making her that way. Â They
definitely  mad her lips look better, mouth wrinkles gone.  I wouldn't buy it
She's got a Nixon complex/thing going on.
Full of love and forgiveness in here. Â If she spread acid on her face because she was lesbian and a random bakery wouldn't make a cake for her, you would all be lovin' on her right now.

@geo liquor Dear ghettopunk slang-festival: You are  posting using offensive  language. "That"... is not a thing, like you are indicating by your pathetically disrespectful language. It's "she" or "her"...... and "hitting" is a another pathetic  ghetto word to substitute for "attracted to". "Up"? WTH does that mean?  I am sure this woman ( and all others) would avoid you like  a bad case of diarrhea  with your attitude.  Go get some psychological counseling.  And learn English!!
Appears someone (*cough*BethanyStorro*cough*) is STILL looking for attention ...
Wonder if Readers Digest will pick up on this revelation of a book! Is there even a Book of the Month Club anymore?
Why in the world would any publisher print this??
The book should be printed on acid-free archival paper! LOL
Who in the world would buy this book? I'm no psychiatrist, but based on what I've read about her the problem isn't body image or OCD, it's extreme narcissism. Wonder if she's ever heard of Boderline Personality Disorder?
Oh well, people like her have no problem humiliating themselves even further if it gives them the attention they crave. Too bad Mona Krueger has decided to 'profit' (and I use that term loosely as I doubt either of them will see a dime from this) off the destructive mental illness of another.
@stephcra So she doesn't have OCD, not BDD, but the author is "profit'ting off of another mental illness you claim she doesn't have... Ok then.
I always thought most crazy people don't realize they are crazy.
The tiltle of her next book is "Fooled you Once Shame on you, Fooled you Twice I've got a Best Seller".
The best thing to come out of her hoax is that she did it to herself and no other innocent victim!
Drink it next time...
Â
There were signs? You mean, like being freakin psychotic?
Â
I dated a girl for 2 weeks, it took almost a month or two to break up with her. You know they're a mental case when you're told, "Just don't call me psycho."
Â
This is seems to fit that bill..
She's still working to get the attention that she craves. She hasn't been cured.
Â
I can't believe that any publisher would print this.
Wheweeee....this poor girl needs mental health care.Â
So who opts to publish this rubbish? They're going to cash in too, IF people buy it. Just say NO. No possible way would I buy this book and support her. She's done enough damage to herself and to the public that took pity on her.
I think perhaps sheâs still a little mentally ill if she thinks people are going to buy this crap.
I would hope that the money she gets goes ENTIRELY to charity, since the entire scheme was born of a fraud.
Â
I'm not holding my breath, though. She screwed the good people of our region once, now she figured she'll screw them again.
@OSUx2 she might be using it to pay back some $$ that she owes related to this hoax?
Feel free to hold your breath on that one.
The media is just a pawn for these idiots. This woman is a criminal who cost taxpayers and took police from other "real" crimes. Why is the media pandering to her?
@I812 'Cause here we all are reading about her?
So, when will she appear on Oprah?
@jpk I thought Oprah was off the air.....or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
@scoreboard @jpk Oprah has her own network now and I think the show airs on that.
Why are the media promoting this fraudster? The book should be about 1 paragraph long and entitle: "I did it all by myself and got paid for it". Is the "book" part of her community service?
I will definitely NOT be buying her book. She got her 15 minutes of infamy, now she should just go away.
http://youtu.be/05OmNDkP8Og
You all know she did this to herself for pity and to get plastic surgery that she couldn't afford.
But now she will sell the book and get what she wanted done anyway...
I hope it is a "Worst" seller you dumb arse.
So will the book be a hoax as well??
I hope nobody buys this book. Â How dare she make money off a "Look at me! Look at me!" stunt that are up so many public resources and kind donations.
@EBee I can't wait for it. I'm going to buy 10 copies.
And do what with them? Throw them at yourself and claim assault or harassment?
Sympathy is the wrong word. More like pity.
I still feel a lot of sympathy for this woman. She was pretty and must have been in a lot of pain to do that to herself. She will have to live with that scarred face for the rest of her life.  I do think what she did was wrong though, especially trying to make up some non-existent perpetrator. I don't think many people will buy the book though.Â
Oh puh - leeeeeeze! We don't need to know what triggered your self-induced acid attack! We don't want anyone to mimic the very idea.Â
Â
Get some mental help instead.Â
@washcomom Clearly she is getting mental help.
