Woman darts across road to catch bus, gets hit by a car
PORTLAND, Ore. - A woman was hit by a car early Friday morning after police say she darted into traffic.
The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. at Southeast 120th Avenue and Foster Road.
According to police, a car was headed westbound on Foster Road when a woman suddenly tried to run across the road to try to get to an eastbound TriMet bus on the other side of Foster. She was not in a crosswalk and witnesses said she did not look for traffic before running into the road.
The woman suffered traumatic, but not life-threatening injuries and is now hospitalized.
The driver stopped and cooperated with police. No citations were issued.
I am the mother of the girl that was hit. I can't blame the rude comments because according to this statement she appears to be the negligent party. What happened in reality is she was attempting to cross the street in a crosswalk; cars had stopped for her in one lane. She  thought it was safe to proceed. Once she got past the first lane of stopped cars it was too late when this car came rushing through at 40mph. (I have a witness to this fact) Now who was in a hurry to get to work???? I am sick of pedestrians being blamed for being hit. The dead can't speak but fortunately even though she nearly went through the windshield she is going to recover.Â
Quoting P. 80 of OREGONS DRIVERS MANUAL-STOPPED VEHICLES. DO NOT PASS A VEHICLE STOPPED AT A CROSSWALK. THIS IS A FREQUENT CAUSE OF DEATH TO PEDESTRIANS. My point in all of this rant...the driver did not stop!!!!!!!!!
 Just remember
Look left, look right, then look left again. Better yet, use the crosswalk.
She was just dying to get to work.
Fortunately for her, she wasn't successful.
Hmmmm....was she on her way to work? Sue her employer for injuries sustained while trying to get to work on time for that whopping $8.80 per hour in that dingy call center!
The only thing better is if she was struck by Darwin.
lol.
Why did the chick(en) cross the road?
@UselessOpinion "Is that a chicken joke?" -- JoAnne Worley, Laugh In
@Mikey @UselessOpinion How do I sense we're not so apart in age?  =)
@UselessOpinion I stab at it.  OMG, let's ban stabbing instruments!  LOL -- I think I cracked myself up.  =)
I can play 'grown up' fairly well. :)
igiwnaapghbacwctr  f (i guarentee i will never as a ped get hit by a car while crossing the road) FACT
I bet she looks both ways next time. This is the thing I fear when I'm out drinking and driving on the weekends, every weekend. Cause its like sure I'm hammered but I was driving fine until you ran into my car. They should sell mouthwash at the liquor store.
@Richard Goezinyah LOL! The twisted thing is, what you just said is more logical than running into moving traffic.
@Richard Goezinyah Awesome. Lol
@Richard Goezinyah lmao
So give her a ticket for jay walking and make her pay for any damage to the car. End of story.
We all know that whole, "Don't worry about the small stuff -- you could get hit by a bus tomorrow" thing. Â Guess she proved them wrong.
@Sundowner lol
wanna bet she was on her cell phone? stupid! wonder if she teaches her kids the same thing?
@john I had a woman fall in front of me last year. She stepped in front of moving traffic (fat and poorly dressed) while talking on her cellphone. She tripped in her flip flops, rolled on the ground (she was so fat that she rolled like a beer keg) and never missed a beat of her phone conversation.
@PeterAWolf And your point?  I didn't hurt your car.  =)
"whale on the beach"!
@Sundowner @PeterAWolf Yea, but it was entertaining.....
@john Hopefully she doesnt have any. But I dont think thats likely.
I hope it knocked some sense into her.
@dkgiovenco lol
So when are they going to stop blaming the drivers for hitting a dbag thats jay walking. I hate those bastards that just cross the street where they want to. Hey, dont mind that crosswalk that's 100 feet away. Its okay. The rules dont apply to you.
What kind of fletching does a female dart have?
@jpkÂ
Isn't it obvious?
Huh, I live about 7 blocks from Foster and this is SOP for people trying to catch a bus.Â
The only thing surprising about this story is that it's a story. There is a person struck running for the 14 (Foster), 72, 9, 66 and 17 every week. And in the summer, 2 or 3 people struck in a week. In the winter they are usually fatal as people are unable to slow down enough to not kill the jaywalker.Â
Oh and of the things to blame TriMet (and I can think of a lot), this is not one of them. This is from people losing respect for things. They have no respect for rules, no respect for the danger and no respect for their own well being.
If Tri Met offered door to door service and picked you up from right outside your house then this would never happen.
So sick of TriMet continually causing these accidents.
@Oregon7812Â
TriMet does offert this, but you first must call briadway Cab, Rose Cirty cab.... lol
But no TriMet DOES actually offer this service for deisabled and elderly but they pay a bit more per ticket.Â
Things like this are happening due to trimet cutting its services and the buses not following the schedules that are printed out and available at each and every bus stop! If you look at these schedules they do not line up when a bus actually arrives most of the time. Sometimes you will get 2 buses that arrive at the same time and this makes no sense.Â
@portlandborn83Â so this idiot deciding to run across the street is fault of Tri Met? that is just wrong, there is always another bus that can be caught, jaywalker should be happy that their final ride today wasn't in the back of a hearse.
I'm a pedestrian and a Tri-Met rider. Here's the thing...cars and buses and trains are bigger and heavier than me. I avoid them when crossing streets! It's such simple logic yet people still don't get it. If you are in a crosswalk and the sign is lit for you to walk then yes, you have the right of way so to speak. Any other time, you are at the mercy of vehicles. For that matter, you are at the mercy of vehicles even if you are crossing properly. What is it we teach our children..Stop, Look, & Listen? Funny how adults seem to have forgotten it so easily.Â
Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way. This car is at fault.
@Oregon7812 You are so full of it that you'd better open up your hatch to let the overflow have somewhere to go. (unless that was sarcasm? please say it was)
@Oregon7812 That's the myth, anyway.
Who is saying ouch, the car or the person?
@Kymberlie2873 It may be they were never taught those lessons as kids...I made it real clear to mine that you never ran into the street without stopping and looking for any reason. Does not matter if it's your ball, the dog, or a friend you don't enter the street without stopping and looking for cars.
One of the toughest things I had to do as an eight-year-old boy was watch my dog run across 4 Lanes of Hwy. traffic as cars narrowly avoided hitting him. He just took off on a romp with no warning and went across a field to the highway with me chasing and yelling and went right out into traffic at full speed.
@Kymberlie2873 Car and Buses and Trains oh my! lol, but you are absolutely right, common sense is no longer common
"Adults" come in all ages! LOL
@jpk lol
A bus or getting to work on time is not worth risking your life for, whether it is running for the bus or driving in traffic. I feel for the driver too and it is nice to see a story where the driver stayed on scene.
Hmm, my name might be wrong for the boards, you CAN cure stupid, with a 2 ton quickly rolling object...... I cant stand idiots like this... So pathetic.
@cantcurestupid  Well, whether or not her "stupid" has been cured is yet to be seen. I'm guessing it's probably not since she lived.
I can't stand stupid people.
@eyeonchinaÂ
Come on now, you shouldn't be so hard on your parents.
@eyeonchina lol
