VANCOUVER, Wash. – A woman who beat her husband to death with a hammer will spend 25 years in prison for her crime.

Donna Williams pleaded guilty and was sentenced for murdering her husband of 33 years, Mark Williams.

During court on Thursday she offered an emotional apology to family members in the courtroom.

“I have not only taken a wonderful person away from them, I took a wonderful person away from myself,” she said. “I loved him. He was my life, my best friend. I’m so sorry.”

Williams originally argued she was a battered wife, but prosecutors said the evidence did not support that theory.

During her sentencing, she said she should have made a better choice that day.

Williams called police last May to report she had killed her husband. Investigators later determined she killed him two weeks prior and left his body in a bed in their home.
