NEAR SANDY, Ore. – A woman was seriously injured when her SUV crashed into a wooded area along Highway 26 west of Sandy, police said.
Someone called police to report the crash at around 8 a.m. Sunday morning, but police believe the crash happened late Saturday night.
Police and rescue crews found the crash in the woods along Highway 26 between Southeast Orient Drive and Kelso Road. They found 35-year-old Kendra A. Domico of Rhododendron, Ore. about 150 feet away from her Ford Explorer. Police said Domico was suffering from hypothermia.
According to Lt. Gregg Hastings, Domico was driving her Ford Explorer eastbound on the highway when it crossed into the westbound lanes, went off the road and crashed into the woods.
It’s unclear what caused the crash. Police said there is no evidence that alcohol or drugs were factors.
Hastings said Domico got out of the SUV and wandered about 150 feet away, where she was found Sunday morning by rescuers. She was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to OHSU in Portland.
Police said a neighbor who lives near the crash scene heard a loud noise at around 9:45 p.m. Saturday and went outside to look for a crash, but didn’t see one.
This is my son's mother. She is extremely lucky to have survived, but it looks like she'll recover. To those who expressed hope that she'll be ok, thank you. There's reason for optimism. Her jaw is fractured in two places, as well as another facial bone, several broken ribs, and (maybe?) a punctured lung, along with lacerations to her head and face. She's having trouble communicating coherently, but the meds and hypothermia are probably responsible. Blood alcohol test shows no intoxication and she doesn't use drugs. I would have noticed if she was impaired, as she just dropped off my son with me, 20-30 mins before accident. She was most likely in a severe state of shock, and utterly confused, which is why she couldn't get to the road for help, and stayed in the area compounding her injuries with hypothermia, her core body temp was 90 Sunday morn. Her condition was critical last night. She's in Intensive Care at OHSU, but her mom just said she thinks Kendra is "better."
 @Anthony Louis ~  Thank you for the up-date on her medical condition... sure hope that she will continue on to full recovery..!   :-)
Perhaps it was a broken tie rod or a blown tire. Â Let's not jump to conclusions here...
they don't call them Ford 'EXPLODER'S' for nothing!
Â
Â
maybe recycling was on her list of things to do....I have pop cans in the back of my van to take back to the store, at times....
Hmmmm..A person walks away from a crash site, even with bad injuries...no evidence of drugs or alcohol?? I would change that to "Suspicion" in my opinion.
 @disgustedman Sounds like she was confused, maybe trying to get help, doesn't sound suspicious at all. Not being sarcastic....
 @SocietyToday  @disgustedman Jumpin' Jehosophat. You're correct. Drugs and/or alcohol simply not a factor. Between the lengthy exposure, shock, and force of the impact--it clearly did disoriented her. She's a smart, resourceful person, and would have walked for help under any other conditions..
 @disgustedman How about extreme shock and disorientation? Much easier to say, actually.
I'm sure OSP would have at least sent a trooper to check out what the witness heard, but couldn't see himself.
 @jpk Wouldn't the responder in an instance of noise be the Sheriff?
@Jumpin' Jehosophat @jpk Would everyone here call the police on "Hearing a Loud Noise?)
 @tondelayo_29  @jpk My first thought was why didn't the person contact police. He obviously heard something out of the ordinary, enough to make him look outside...Especially if it is a common spot for crashes
 @tondelayo_29  @jpk I bet the neighbors wish they had this time....especially along a hiway.Â
@Jumpin' Jehosophat Possibly, but OSP is in charge of the state highways, and they would probably have someone closer. Sandy PD and Clackamas Co SO could both have headed that way to find out, depending on call load.
Based on my recent past history, the 911 call taker would have passed it on to OSP dispatch, especially if nothing was seen, only heard.
 @jpk  ambulance, even!
 @jpk Yes, true. But a noise that isn't immediately associated with an auto would be a call to the Sheriff first, who would determine an auto accident and call ambilance, fire and OSP for the investigation of the accident.
I think!
I hope the woman recovers okay. I am glad to see pictures of these accidents being posted with the story. See what can happen? After viewing a few of these it should make folks drive more carefully. I know I do.
Poor young lady. Glad she survived the crash. The van looks pretty well demolished.
Maybe dozed off at the wheel...? Â Â Sure hope she'll be OK..! Â Â
Why are all those pop cans around her vehicle?
@Mikey Probably was taking them to be recycled? On the other hand have you looked in cars lately? Some of them look like garbage cans on wheels, with plenty of stuff rattling in there to get caught under a brake pedal.
 @Mikey ~  If you look right up at the back opening of her SUV, at the left side, you can see a large black trash-bag there; looks like the bottom if it got ripped open... you can see one end of a pop-can there...Â
Ouch! That certainly lives up to the headline, being "along"-side Hiway 26. Glad they found her and hope she totally recovers soon.
Texting perhaps? Avoiding hitting a deer? Wow,I hope she makes it ok.Poor woman was laying there for several hours in the freezing cold.
 @noneofyourbizzness Poop occurs, you know; sometimes even to careful drivers!
 @Jumpin' Jehosophat  @noneofyourbizzness Now, now, JJ, that undermines the "everything bad that happens is the result of stupidity" meme that's much more cool on these threads.
