Kayaker's body discovered in Columbia River

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- Police are seeking information about the body of a female kayaker recovered Friday morning from the Columbia River.
The body was spotted beneath the Interstate 205 bridge at about 9:30 a.m. by Washington Fish and Wildlife workers who were performing a routine patrol, Vancouver police said.
The woman was dressed in outdoor clothing and wearing a flotation device. She was not wearing identification, police said.
There were no obvious signs of foul play, said Vancouver police spokeswoman Kim Kapp.
Responding sheriff's deputies from Clark and Multnomah counties began searching the area near the body and found an unoccupied kayak on the eastern tip of Government Island.
Police said it appeared the kayak may have contained two passengers.
The Vancouver Police Department's major crimes team was called in to investigate, as is standard procedure in missing persons cases and certain cases involving fatalities.
Police are seeking to identify the kayaker and want information from the public about whether she is, in fact, connected to the kayak and has been reported missing.
The woman is described as in her early 50s and Asian.
Police said they have identified two people who they believe were associated with the woman, and who have not been found. They said a vehicle owned by one of the people was found at a location in Oregon where people frequently launch kayaks, and a yellow kayak owned by one of the individuals was missing from their home. Police did not release any further details.
Anyone with information is asked to call Vancouver police Detective Sgt. Scott Creager at 360-487-7424.
Is this the prefect crime.... ?
I listened to this whole thing unravel on my digital scanner - what a classic Cluster F@#$ with too many agencies involved. She had a rope wrapped around her and was amongst a debris pile. A CCSO detective put a halt to the craziness until he could get there with the ME - we will know nothing until the autopsy.Â
@boned in case you didn't know, it's illegal to repeat what you hear from a police scanner. anyone who wants to know whats going on can buy their own. you don't want the feds and local police knocking down your door do you?
Very sad. Hopefully they'll connect her to her loved ones, soon.
@Lips ~ I agree, Lips... whoever she was, she no doubt has people somewhere who love her and are probably worried about her...
How unfortunate. What I'm courious to is why someone would kayak on the Columbia in the winter time? Even with a flotation device.. a few minutes in that water and your going to be screwed just the same. Seems reckless to me. Sad.
@Liberty4_WA Tell that to the Northern Peoples i.e. Alaska, Siberia, Greenland who use Kayaks in far colder water.  You can roll a kayak a full 360.  This had to be person or persons who were little experienced  and unprepared.  Yes I have Kayaked in Alaska where I lived on an Island until 1998 when I sold my home. Fished traveled and hunted from it. Poly Pro works wonders as does a dry suit.Â
@Liberty4_WA are you already blaming the victim for her death? wow....
Type II PFDs (the horse-collar design) are made to float an unconscious person face-up. The Type III PFDs (vest design) typically worn by kayakers would not do that. Maybe she had a medical issue and lost consciousness, and drowned face-down due to her PFD design. Â
Aren't Floatation Devices suppose to prevent these tragedies?
Cold water cause hypothermia, unconciousness and death. When unconcious you face may go underwater even wearing a life jacket, I hope they find the next of kin soon, and the other possible person... There is dry suits and wetsuits that can protect you from cold water for extended periods.Â

Nothing prevents drowning, but a flotation device will help.

Here is a more accurate report from KGW.
Â
The unidentified woman was found by a fish and wildlife patrol officer just after 10 a.m. near the I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge.
Kim Kapp with Vancouver police said the woman had on kayaking gear. There was no sign of foul play, according to police.
The victim appeared to be an Asian female in her early 50s, dressed in outdoor clothing and wearing a floatation device, police said.
Searchers from Multnomah and Clark counties were investigating.

Dressed as if she was on a boat? I wear the same outfits whether i'm at work, Fred Meyer, Target, Cup & Saucer, AND on a boat.
@Bettie PinUp you wear a pirate outfit everywhere?
@Bettie PinUp You need a better wardrobe.
 @Mechanic  @Bettie  LMAO!
I'm sorry.  Dressed like she was on a boat.  Now just how does someone dress when they are on a  boat???
@Common Sence Dressed on a boat? Haven't you ever seen the Titanic movies?
@Common Sence One wears waterproof clothing and a floatation device. You know, like in the story.
@Mechanic  @Common Hey, they had very little information and just updated the story.....like they always do. Post story with few details, people comment, then they update, and d*uches like you accuse people of not reading the story after the story's been updated.
@deejm2112 @Common Well, mostly they don't read the stories. Or they ask stupid questions with obvious answers when the story is still developing.
@Common Sence maybe she was dressed like a Skipper. or Gilligan. or Maryanne
OK people, stop with the heartless jokes! Her family is going to read this. Geez
